Josh Brolin Confirms Those Hal Jordan Green Lantern Talks & Possible DC Future

As a seasoned gamer of the comic book movie universe, I must say, I was quite intrigued by the rumors of Josh Brolin stepping into the Green Lantern suit, especially after his stellar performances as Thanos and Cable. Yet, life in this genre is full of twists and turns, much like the labyrinthine storylines of our beloved comics. When Brolin passed on the role, I couldn’t help but feel a pang of disappointment – alas, it seems Hal Jordan has found a new mentor in Kyle Chandler.

Initially, it seemed Josh Brolin, known for his roles as Thanos and Cable, was poised to headline DC Studios and HBO’s Green Lantern TV series. Reports suggested that Brolin was being considered for the part of Hal Jordan, a widely recognized Green Lantern character, playing an older Hal Jordan mentoring a younger John Stewart. However, Brolin declined the role, which eventually went to Kyle Chandler (from Friday Night Lights and Bloodline), leaving open possibilities for other projects in the future for Brolin.

As I chatted with ComicBook about his latest flick, “Brothers,” where I share the screen with the talented Peter Dinklage, I set the record straight about the rumors swirling around my potential role in DC. To clear things up, I won’t be joining their universe this time around.

“You understand, right? The Green Lantern project didn’t turn out as planned, but that’s fine,” Brolin shared with us. “Things are taking care of themselves. There’s speculation about Kyle Chandler taking over the role, and I think he’s terrific. Honestly, we’ll have to wait and see what happens next.

The crucial point is that Brolin might reprise his role in the upcoming DC Universe, if an opportunity arises. With his previous roles as Thanos in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe and Cable in Deadpool 2, another DC character could make him one of the most active actors in the comic book film industry.

Chris Mundy, from the hit show Ozark, is taking on the role of showrunner for Lanterns and is collaborating in scriptwriting with Damon Lindelof (known for Watchmen and The Leftovers) and DC Comics writer Tom King. This upcoming HBO series is rumored to be a murder mystery that leans more towards the style of a season from True Detective, rather than the usual superhero escapade.

Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, expressed great joy as Chris Mundy and Damon Lindelof rejoin forces with Tom on a revitalized version of ‘Green Lantern.’ In a statement when the project was given the green light, he stated, “As part of James and Peter’s plan for the DC Universe, this fresh live-action series will usher in an exciting new chapter.

James Gunn and Peter Safran, co-CEOs of DC Studios, are excited to announce that they will be bringing a significant DC comic book series to HBO. Chris, Damon, and Tom are in charge of this project. The characters John Stewart and Hal Jordan, who are among DC’s most captivating personalities, will feature prominently in the series LANTERNS, which presents an original detective story that plays a crucial role in the unified DC Universe we plan to introduce next summer with Superman.

As an enthusiastic film-lover, I’m thrilled to announce that I’ll be catching “Brothers” in select cinemas starting October 10th! If you can’t make it to the big screen, don’t worry – it’ll be available for streaming on Prime Video from October 17th. Starring none other than Brolin and the talented Peter Dinklage, this movie is not one to miss!
