All Creatures Great and Small stars on season 6: ‘We’re on a different journey to the books’

As a long-time admirer of period dramas and someone who has spent countless hours engrossed in the charming world of All Creatures Great and Small, I must say that the ongoing fifth season has been nothing short of a delight. The performances by Samuel West and Anna Madeley as Siegfried and Mrs Hall have been exceptional, to say the least.

In the ongoing broadcast of the fifth season of All Creatures Great and Small on Channel 5, actors Samuel West (Siegfried) and Anna Madeley (Mrs Hall) have shared insights about the series’ potential continuation and its adherence to James Herriot’s books, offering a glimpse into what fans can expect.

West stated: “No, we’re planning to talk about that. To clarify, one aspect of the books is portraying Tristan’s departure. However, the original Tristan left the practice, and I don’t believe we’ll follow suit. I certainly hope not. So at that juncture, I expect we won’t adhere to the established canon.

Madeley went on to say: “Indeed, our interpretation differs significantly from both the ’70s adaptation and the book itself, making it a unique journey. Although the original stories serve as our main inspiration, the path and character development in this version are quite distinct. We’ll find out how it all unfolds.

West stated: “Being part of a continuing series is similar to real life because you’re fully immersed and do your best with each role, yet you never truly know what’s coming next.

“It’s not like doing a play where you know you’re going to have to shoot the king in two pages.

It’s intriguing not knowing exactly what will happen in season six, it can stir up a small amount of unease, though I wouldn’t call it full-blown worry. Yet, there should be room for unexpected twists, much like the unpredictability of real life.

Although we’re still unsure about what direction season 6 might head in right now, it is certain that the remaining episodes of season 5 will feature the comeback of Callum Woodhouse’s character, Tristan, who had been off battling in the war during season 4.

West has observed Siegfried’s response to his brother’s return as follows: “It’s clear he’s transformed. There are aspects of this change I can’t fully grasp. It seems he’s witnessed things so terrible, he chooses not to share them. And he’s hiding behind alcohol and cheerfulness.
