Ghosts creators line up animation project on Netflix

As a cinephile with a penchant for British humor, I find myself brimming with anticipation at the prospect of yet another creative endeavor from the dynamic duo behind Ghosts, Laurence Rickard and Ben Willbond. Their knack for crafting comedies that seamlessly blend wit, absurdity, and heart is unparalleled, and their collaboration with Big Talk Studios and Blue Zoo Animation Studio promises a visual spectacle to match their brilliant narratives.

As a passionate admirer, I’m thrilled to share that the brilliant minds behind “Ghosts,” namely Laurence Rickard and Ben Willbond, are joining forces once more! Currently, they’re crafting an animated comedy series destined for the screens of Netflix.

Initially, Deadline broke the story, mentioning that although the show hasn’t been officially approved yet, it’s under development by Big Talk Studios and Blue Zoo Animation Studio – the team behind “The Adventures of Paddington.

Titled “In Case of Emergency,” this upcoming series appears to draw influence from “Family Guy.” It’s set in a bustling British hospital and has already produced a six-minute animated pilot, with voiceovers provided by notable figures within the British comedy scene.

Apart from working on Ghosts, Rickard and Willbond have teamed up before on Horrible Histories, Yonderland, and the 2015 film Bill, as part of their production group Them They. Together, they also penned the 2022 standalone TV comedy We Are Not Alone for Dave.

Reports indicate that Netflix may have discussed creating an animated series with Big Talk Studio, similar to their past projects such as BoJack Horseman, Big Mouth, Arcane, Inside Job, Mulligan, and Twilight of the Gods.

Since the conclusion of their television series over the holiday season, the members of the Ghosts team have remained active. Not only are they releasing a book titled “Ghosts: Brought to Life – The Making of a Classic” later this month, but Willbond is scheduled to appear in the upcoming season of Greg Davies’s show, The Cleaner.

Simon Hynd, who oversaw the last two seasons of the show, is simultaneously developing another sitcom titled “Can You Keep a Secret?” featuring Dawn French and Mark Heap.

In the upcoming series, French and Heap portray a married duo who stage their husband’s demise for financial gain through insurance, intending to depart with the money and embark on a fresh start together.
