As a seasoned movie buff with a penchant for Agatha Christie adaptations and a soft spot for period dramas set in the 1930s, I am positively thrilled by the images released for BBC’s upcoming production, Towards Zero. The ensemble cast is nothing short of stellar, boasting familiar faces from beloved series like Sex Education, Black Mirror, and Call the Midwife.
The BBC has shared an array of photos for their upcoming Agatha Christie remake titled “Towards Zero,” which includes stars like Anjelica Huston, Matthew Rhys, and Mimi Keane from the show “Sex Education.
In the latest photos, Oliver Jackson Cohen portrays Nevile Strange, a character who chooses to spend the summer with his former spouse Audrey (played by Ella Lily Hyland), even though they’ve had a divisive divorce.
Instead, they journey to the seashore manor belonging to Nevile’s aunt, Lady Tressilian (Huston). Alongside them goes Nevile’s newlywed spouse, Kay (Keene). Naturally, feelings are quite tense.
“In this drama, expect to find a loyal servant to a long-suffering woman, a secretive butler for a mysterious gentleman, an estranged relative bearing a grudge, an elderly family attorney, a curious orphan, and a cunning French swindler. Trouble is brewing, as murder may soon be on the agenda.
In order to unravel an intricate web of envy, dishonesty, and broken relationships, a detective struggling with his identity must rediscover his calling. Will he manage to crack the case and prevent another casualty?
A passionate love triangle, a strong-willed matron, and a gathering of adversaries at a house party. All drawn… Toward a Fatal Conclusion.
Rhys takes on the role of Inspector Leach, alongside other cast members such as Clarke Peters (known for his part as Eric), Anjana Vasan (who appeared in Black Mirror), Jack Farthing (from The Serial Killer’s Wife), Jackie Clune (recognized from Motherland), Grace Doherty (a familiar face from Call the Midwife), Khalil Gharbia (starring in Mary & George) and Adam Hugill (who has acted in Sherwood).
Following the unveiling of the photos, author Rachel Bennette expressed in a statement: “Her characters in these works are among the most affluent and intricate of Christie’s creations, and I was instantly drawn in by the allure, especially that of her female personas.
Bringing these characters to vivid existence in this gripping narrative that weaves truth and deception, affection and animosity, has been a captivating experience. The story is set against the ominous glamour of the 1930s but seems strikingly relevant to our present times.
Agatha Christie’s Towards Zero will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in 2025.
