As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I find myself deeply appreciative of Sony’s innovative approach to combat scalpers and ensure that the 30th Anniversary PS5 Pro bundle reaches its rightful owners – passionate PlayStation fans like me!
Sony is taking steps to curb the issue of scalpers by implementing a different strategy for selling its 30th Anniversary PS5 Pro package. Over the past week, pre-orders for various PlayStation 30th Anniversary items became available in North America and Europe, leading to quite a disorganized scenario. Not only was the buying process perplexing, but most of the 30th Anniversary Collection had already been sold out on PlayStation Direct before fans even got a chance to make a purchase. Now, as sales commence in Japan, Sony is attempting to control who gets their hands on the PS5 Pro 30th Anniversary bundle slightly more.
A report from Automaton reveals an exclusive approach to pre-orders for the PS5 Pro 30th Anniversary console in Japan by Sony. Instead of making it available to all, they’ve set specific conditions for potential buyers: they must have an active PlayStation Network account with a minimum of 30 hours usage on both PS5 and PS4 consoles from February 2014 to September 2024. Although this may not appear too high a threshold, it serves as a means for Sony to identify genuine PlayStation enthusiasts, rather than individuals seeking the hardware solely for resale purposes.
In contrast to how pre-orders for the PS5 Pro were handled in the Western regions, Sony will adopt a unique approach in Japan. Instead of overwhelming the PS Direct site at once and waiting in a virtual queue, they will accept open orders for the PS5 Pro 30th Anniversary package from anyone interested. If demand surpasses the number of units being sold (which is highly likely), a lottery system will decide who secures their purchase. While there’s still an element of chance involved, this method is undoubtedly more efficient than the previous one.
What’s your take on the modifications Sony implemented while offering the PlayStation 30th Anniversary merchandise exclusively in Japan? Would you have preferred similar limitations if applied to other countries as well? Share your opinions with me on social media using @MooreMan12.
