Atwell will be joining the Heartstopper cast as Nick’s (Kit Connor) aunt, Diane.

During their upcoming summer vacation in Menorca, Diane intends to share some challenging insights regarding Nick’s relationship with Charlie (Joe Locke), as reported by Variety.

In simpler terms, Diane – a character who occasionally appears on the show – will bring to life an eagerly awaited scene inspired by the initial Alice Oseman comic strips.

In a chat with Teen Vogue, Connor shared insights on Diane’s role in season 3, explaining that “she provides some guidance on navigating interactions with someone experiencing problems similar to Charlie’s.

The concepts presented here might seem basic, yet they’re remarkably beneficial. They offer assistance to individuals navigating challenges faced by family members, friends, or acquaintances who are experiencing similar struggles.

Regarding Diane’s appearance in season 3, Oseman explained to Entertainment Weekly: “It was necessary at that stage not to suddenly insert her character into the narrative for only a single scene. Such an action would have been illogical.

“I needed to return to the script, add fresh scenes featuring her character, elaborate on her relationship with Nick, and guide the audience gradually towards a final scene that would remain poignant while making sense and having the intended emotional impact.

Certainly, given that this particular scene ranks high among fans’ favorites from the source comics, there was a certain expectation when it came to featuring Diane and portraying the event on-screen, adding an extra layer of challenge to our production process.

Oseman admitted that it was “definitely one of the bigger screenwriting challenges” in reworking the moment between Diane and Nick. She said: “But I’m really happy with how it all turned out. I think it works out really well and it makes total sense within the episode and it’s really emotional.”

Interestingly enough, it was found that Atwell hadn’t tried out for the part of Diane. Instead, Oseman shared that she’s an accomplished actress whom they confidently believed would excel in the role, stating: “She’d be fantastic.

Without a doubt, Atwell has made quite a name for herself, particularly with her appearances in Captain America, Agent Carter, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, Black Mirror, along with earlier performances in Brideshead Revisited, The Pillars of the Earth and The Duchess.
