Nintendo Switch Online Adding Game Boy Advance Classic Never Released Outside Japan

As a seasoned gamer who has witnessed the evolution of gaming consoles since the days of Game Boy Advance, I can hardly contain my excitement about the upcoming addition of F-Zero: GP Legend and F-Zero Climax to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack library.

Users with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscriptions will gain access to the Game Boy Advance application starting from October 11th, which hosts a variety of games that were initially launched on the handheld device. Two additional GBA classics, F-Zero: GP Legend and F-Zero Climax, will be added to the platform on this date. Notably, while F-Zero: GP Legend was localized in 2004, F-Zero Climax has not received an official release outside of Japan up until now. This isn’t the first time a previously Japan-exclusive game appears on the GBA app, but fans of F-Zero are sure to be thrilled by its inclusion!

Throughout the lifetime of the Game Boy Advance console, three F-Zero games were developed and released. Currently, “F-Zero: Maximum Velocity” can be played via Nintendo Switch Online service. The upcoming update this month will include the remaining two games. It’s surprising to learn that an anime series based on the F-Zero games was once produced, which served as inspiration for “F-Zero: GP Legend,” a game that features certain characters and designs derived from the show. A year following the release of “F-Zero: GP Legend,” “F-Zero Climax” debuted on Game Boy Advance, introducing additional features such as a track editor.

For almost two decades, it has been since the last release in the F-Zero racing series, but now, Nintendo has reintroduced the series on Switch with F-Zero 99. Excitingly, fans will soon be able to experience F-Zero Climax as well. Whether this abundance of F-Zero content might spark a new game for Nintendo Switch 2 or even a remastered version of F-Zero GX, remains to be seen. However, it’s wonderful that after such a long wait, fans of the series will have something to cheer about on their Switches.

Releasing the pair of F-Zero games will boost the GBA games on Nintendo Switch Online to 23, making for an impressive collection so far. Among them are beloved titles such as Metroid Fusion, The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, and Golden Sun. However, there are many other fan favorites yet to be included. Here’s hoping for more additions in the near future!
