As a longtime DC fan with a soft spot for the underdogs and a deep affection for the animated series “Justice League,” I can’t help but be thrilled about the new direction of Justice League Unlimited. The idea of a more inclusive, diverse, and populous Justice League is like a dream come true!
With the launch of DC’s All In initiative, a new Justice League is born, as depicted in the comic book “Justice League Unlimited,” penned by Mark Waid and Dan Mora. This team, encompassing a multitude of characters, embarks on thrilling adventures. Initially, former Teen Titans and time-traveling hero Booster Gold receive membership cards, but by the story’s end, an unexpected twist occurs.
As a passionate gamer, I can’t help but feel excited about the prospect of a more relatable Justice League. It’s great to see that B- and C-list heroes, who often get overlooked, will finally have their moment in the spotlight. The recruiting montage is action-packed, showcasing both familiar heavyweights and lesser-known characters. The climax of this sequence leads us to the Watchtower, where an unprecedented gathering of over 20 heroes convene for the first meeting of the new Justice League.
Characters seen in either the montage or crowd scenes consist of Starfire, Jaime Reyes (Blue Beetle), Ted Kord (Blue Beetle), Roy Harper, Metamorpho (doubting his life decisions), Supergirl, Fire and Ice, Booster Gold, Robin (Damian), Shazam, Donna Troy, Black Canary, Green Arrow, Detective Chimp, Firestorm, Swamp Thing, Alan Scott, Jade, Obsidian, Mr. Terrific, Dr. Light (Kimiyo), the Chinese Super-Man, Power Girl, Black Lightning, Dr. Fate, Tim Drake, Raven, Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter, Zatanna, Yara Flor, Cyborg, Beast Boy, Guy Gardner, Flash, Aquaman, Mera, Orion, and Nightwing. It’s likely that a few more characters were present amidst the chaos, as it intensifies when Darkseid arrives on the scene.
It appears that only Robotman declined the League’s invitation, choosing instead to devote his time to leading the Doom Patrol. This decision might serve as a unique writing opportunity for some, allowing them to set their characters apart or minimize the requirement for crossovers – simply stating “unfortunately, my character wasn’t able or willing to join.
The intention is to create an expansive environment for the “Justice League Unlimited” comic, offering Waid a vast range of artistic options while simultaneously mirroring the cherished “Justice League” animated series. This approach allows for flexibility in character inclusion, as members join and depart based on the demands of the team and the narrative. It also facilitates a straightforward method to summon a multitude of heroes for a large-scale, crossover-style battle.
