As a die-hard fan with a heart full of nostalgia, I can’t help but cheer for Studio Bones as they take another giant leap into the world of anime films! With their rich history of bringing some of my all-time favorites like Cowboy Bebop and Fullmetal Alchemist to life, it’s no surprise that they’re expanding their silver screen presence.
Studio Bones has significantly grown its influence within the anime industry, not solely thanks to “My Hero Academia,” but also due to its earlier contributions and ongoing production of numerous other popular series like “Cowboy Bebop,” “Fullmetal Alchemist,” “Bungo Stray Dogs,” and “Metallic Rouge.” In an unexpected move, the studio has unveiled plans to establish a new film division, aiming to manage its expanding workload more efficiently. With anime films generating increasing revenues at the box office, it’s no wonder that Studio Bones is seizing the opportunity presented by the medium’s burgeoning success.
The freshly christened film division, Bones Film Co. Ltd, is set to boost the overall studio by contributing to the development of future cinematic productions. Notably, this isn’t the first foray into filmmaking for Bones; the wildly popular series “My Hero Academia” has already spawned four full-length films that have chronicled Deku and his classmates from Class 1-A on their crime-fighting journey. Moreover, Bones has a rich history of creating films within other franchises such as Fullmetal Alchemist, Bungo Stray Dogs, Eureka Seven, and many more.
The Decision For Bones’ New Division
In an interview, Studio Bones co-founder Toshihiro Kawamoto explained their reasoning behind expanding the studio: “If one of our productions becomes extremely successful and demands a sequel, we might encounter challenges such as needing another studio or additional staff.” Given the growing number of franchises that are contributing to Studio Bones’ extensive library, it’s understandable that they would need to scale up their operations.
Bones’ Future
Absolutely, “My Hero Academia” plays a significant role in the current and upcoming storyline for Bones. The anime version is wrapping up its seventh season, trying to align with the original content. Although a confirmation for an eighth season is still pending, it seems likely that the TV series may require at least one more season to conclude the tale of Class 1-A properly. The fourth movie in the superhero shonen series, titled “My Hero Academia: You’re Next“, has already generated buzz in Japan and aims to do the same when it releases in North America on October 11th. As of now, a fifth film in the shonen franchise hasn’t been announced yet.
For 2025, Studio Bones is working on an exciting new anime adaptation titled “Gachiakuta“. This series initially appeared in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2022 and shares an art style similar to “My Hero Academia” by creator Kei Urana. However, unlike the story of Deku’s superhero adventures, “Gachiakuta” follows its protagonist Rudo as he struggles to survive in the grimy underbelly of his world. After being falsely accused of a crime, Rudo is banished from his home and must navigate an even harsher environment. But fate has a twist in store for him, as he encounters help when he needs it most. As of now, Studio Bones hasn’t announced a release date for this series, but with its captivating premise, it’s poised to be one of the standout anime releases of 2025.
