As a seasoned gamer who has spent countless hours exploring open-world games, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation for Sucker Punch’s upcoming title, Ghost of Yotei. Having played and completed Ghost of Tsushima, I must admit that while the game was visually stunning and engaging, its repetitive side tasks did become a bit tiresome towards the end. So hearing that Sucker Punch is aiming to create a more diverse and enjoyable open-world experience with Ghost of Yotei fills me with hope.
According to Sucker Punch, they aim to make the world of Ghost of Yotei offer more distinctive activities than what was found in Ghost of Tsushima. Even though Ghost of Tsushima is highly acclaimed, it’s fair to say that its open-world wasn’t exceptionally creative. The game had numerous side missions such as finding 49 foxes, writing 23 haikus, and chopping down 20 bamboo posts. While these tasks were enjoyable initially, they started feeling repetitive, especially for those aiming to fully complete the game. It appears that with Ghost of Yotei, Sucker Punch is trying to steer clear of this pattern.
In a conversation with The New York Times, Jason Connell, the creative director at Ghost of Yotei, shared that one key area SuckerPunch aims to enhance is the game’s world. Concretely, Connell highlighted repetition as a challenge often found in open-world games, an issue that Ghost of Tsushima faced some criticism for. To address this in Ghost of Yotei, the studio is striving to strike a harmonious balance between offering a wealth of activities within the game’s world and ensuring that this content remains consistently engaging.
Connell pointed out that creating an open-world game often involves repeating similar tasks, but he aimed to counteract this monotony by designing distinct and fresh experiences instead.
Improving diversity within the open-world setting is probably one of the most significant ways that the upcoming game, Ghost of Yotei, can surpass its predecessor. Open-world games in general have undergone considerable development since 2020, when Ghost of Tsushima was initially launched. Recent titles such as Elden Ring and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom have placed a greater focus on exploration freedom while still offering the choice to follow a more structured path. It remains uncertain whether or not this type of structure will be incorporated into Ghost of Yotei, as specific details about gameplay are yet to be revealed.
The upcoming sequel to Ghost of Yotei, which fans have been eagerly awaiting, is expected to release sometime in 2025, although an exact date has yet to be confirmed. If it does adhere to this timeline, the game will only be playable on PlayStation 5 consoles.
