As a long-time fan of the Metal Gear Solid series, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and trepidation regarding Konami’s upcoming remake, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater. On one hand, the faithfulness to the original gameplay experience is a welcome decision that promises to satisfy die-hard fans like myself. On the other hand, the prospect of potential remakes for earlier entries in the series leaves me with a sense of uncertainty.
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater was perhaps the perfect game for Konami to remake and bring the series back to life with, because though it’s certainly an old title that could do with technical, visual, and quality-of-life enhancements, core aspects of the gameplay experience itself are strong enough that they don’t need to be changed too much in a modern take- which is why the upcoming Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is going to be as faithful of a remake as it will be. That, however, won’t be possible if Konami were to remake earlier entries in the series- which is something that Konami itself is very much aware of.
In a recent interview with Famitsu, Noriaki Okamura, producer of the Metal Gear series at Konami, was asked about potential remakes of other titles within the cherished franchise. While he emphasized their focus on the upcoming release and gathering fan feedback first, he also hinted at possible hypothetical remakes for earlier instalments like Metal Gear 1, 2, and the original Metal Gear Solid. He mentioned that if these remakes were to occur, they would necessitate substantial adjustments in gameplay and design compared to MGS 3.
In summary, let’s put our thoughts on hold until we complete this project first. To illustrate, consider if we were to recreate a fresh version of the classic Metal Gear Solid games, such as Metal Gear 1 and 2, there would undoubtedly be certain elements that wouldn’t align with the techniques used in MGS Delta, particularly when it comes to reworking the level design. Consequently, numerous parts will require new development.
We pondered over the idea of developing the upcoming Metal Gear series, pushing the boundaries as much as possible. I encourage all of you to play MGS Delta, share your thoughts, and let’s progress together.
As a devoted fan, I must share that Okamura mentioned, although with a heavy heart, as more of the original Metal Gear crew are departing from the current Konami team, it seems the company is now concentrating on crafting a fitting future for this cherished series.
He stated that a significant number of employees who initially worked together are no longer with us. Before any more team members leave, he wants to establish a plan to safeguard the Metal Gear series for the next decade, or even half a century. In his opinion, this is something essential that we need to accomplish.
The game titled “Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater” is currently being worked on for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and personal computers. At this time, no official launch date has been announced.
