As a longtime fan of One-Punch Man, I can confidently say that the anticipation for Season 3 has been a rollercoaster ride. The first season was nothing short of a masterpiece, setting an unparalleled standard in animation and storytelling. However, the second season left me feeling a bit deflated, like Saitama after one punch.
As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to share that we’re finally seeing the third season of One-Punch Man! This could very well shape the future of this incredible franchise. The journey of One-Punch Man has been quite unique in today’s anime landscape. It all started from ONE, the series creator, who penned an original webcomic. Then, Yusuke Murata, our talented illustrator, took it a step further by adapting it into an official manga series with fresh artwork. Later, Madhouse brought it to life as an anime with a single season in 2015. But then, there was a four-year pause. Now, we’re back and ready for more!
The initial season of “One-Punch Man” remains a standout among the greatest anime seasons ever produced, rightfully so, given the exceptional effort put into every facet of its production. The action sequences, humor, and everything in between were all presented brilliantly, making it an unforgettable viewing experience from start to finish. It left viewers eager for more, anticipating future developments. However, with Season 2, the anime finds itself in a more uncertain state as fans anxiously await further instalments, particularly Season 3.
What Happened to One-Punch Man?
In 2019, the second season of “One-Punch Man” aired, surprising fans with an entirely different vibe compared to their initial expectations. Unlike the first season produced by Madhouse, this new installment was developed by J.C. Staff, with an entirely fresh crew. Adapting the next significant arc of One-Punch Man proved challenging from the get-go for J.C. Staff, as they faced a daunting task: not only did they have to meet expectations set by the first season, but they also had to outdo themselves given that this series marks one of the longest singular sagas in ONE’s storyline overall.
Initially, One-Punch Man Season 2 drew criticism from its early promotional content due to visual differences compared to the first season. However, the finished product was improved with some final adjustments before its release, demonstrating a more balanced presentation. Despite this, it became evident that the team responsible for the new season might not achieve the same level of greatness as the initial one. The situation got more challenging because the second season would offer less Saitama and action compared to the first viewing experience.
The second season of One-Punch Man began adapting the Human Monster Saga. In contrast to the previous Hero Association Saga, which had a more standalone, episode-by-episode structure that helped viewers get familiar with characters like Saitama and other heroes, the Human Monster Saga focuses on a new secondary character, Garou, the self-proclaimed Hero Hunter. Throughout the season, we follow Garou as he battles heroes in his quest to increase his power. As the story progresses, it also introduces the Monster Association, significantly enlarging the cast of characters.
In the upcoming season, we’ll see a shift in focus away from Saitama, which, being the main character of this series, feels a bit odd. However, it seems like we’re going to delve deeper into the battles of Garou and the gang, as there are more monster adversaries on the horizon. This battle-heavy approach looks set to be a significant part of the third season too. As a gamer, I can’t wait to see how these fights unfold!
What Can One-Punch Man Season 3 Do to Fix It?
In Season 3 of One-Punch Man, we find ourselves right in the thick of things, continuing directly from where the story left off – smack dab in the heart of the Monster Association arc. This particular storyline makes up about two thirds of the entire Human Monster Saga, which spans over 140 chapters. The last episodes of Season 2 took us to Chapter 85, so it looks like we’re in for a long run of this saga in the upcoming season (and potentially a fourth one if it goes that far). The action is non-stop, making for an exhilarating viewing experience in Season 3. Although Saitama may not feature heavily, there will be plenty of intense battles between the S-Class Heroes and the most powerful monsters.
The main issue then, however, is the fact that J.C. Staff will once again be behind the upcoming third season of One-Punch Man. They’ll be returning from Season 2, but the staff behind it has yet to be announced as of the time of this publication. One Punch Man Season 3 was officially confirmed to be in the works back in 2022, but the studio wasn’t confirmed to be behind the series until earlier this year. The season has likely been in development for quite a long time, and thankfully the third season will see the team behind it learn from what went down in the second season.
If a more effective release plan is implemented for the production of One-Punch Man Season 3, it could potentially be the series that fans have been eagerly anticipating. However, given its current situation, this upcoming season might be crucial for the future of the franchise. The reception to the anime’s first two seasons varied significantly, so fan reactions are likely to be divided even before the new episodes premiere. Regardless, this disparity in response could potentially work in One-Punch Man’s favor if the new episodes surpass the quality of the second season. In other words, as long as it’s better than the second season, One-Punch Man’s new episodes are likely to be well-received.
If by some chance, this third season of One-Punch Man misses the mark or, heaven forbid, takes a turn for the worse, then it might forever change my perspective of the series.
