As a lifelong fan of Middle-earth and its rich tapestry of tales, I find myself both saddened and exhilarated by the events unfolding in The Rings of Power season 2. The heroic demise of King Durin, played masterfully by Peter Mullan, left an indelible mark on my heart. His selfless act, reminiscent of Aragorn’s sacrifice in The Lord of the Rings, underscores the profound depth of love and duty that these characters embody.
Warning: Spoilers for The Rings of Power season 2 episode 8 ahead.
In episode 8 of The Rings of Power’s second season, there was an abundance of sorrow and loss as several of our cherished characters met their end during the struggle against Sauron (played by Charlie Vickers), signifying a significant turning point in the storyline.
However, it was King Durin’s (Peter Mullan) death that stood out as incredibly brave, as he chose to give up his life to protect his loved ones and his realm during the climactic episode.
In the second season, King Durin and his son Prince Durin (played by Owain Arthur) found themselves in conflict as a result of the king’s fixation on his ring. This obsession caused him to become emotionally distant, self-centered, and insensitive.
However, in his last breaths, the king discarded the ring and reverted back to his true self, as he emotionally parted with his son and confronted a fearsome Balrog instead.
Should the third season of the series be approved, it’s probable that we will witness Prince Durin dealing with all the hurdles associated with ascending to the throne.
Here’s everything you need to know!
What is a Balrog in The Rings of Power?
A Balrog represents a monstrous, demonic entity born from the powerful will of supernatural beings called the Maiar. However, it was loyal to the malevolent ruler, Morgoth, during the ancient era of Middle-earth known as the First Age.
These towering beasts are draped in shadows and flames, wielding weapons like blazing mobs and massive swords.
In the epic Lord of the Rings trilogy, I’m referring to the formidable Balrog known as ‘Durin’s Bane.’ This fearsome creature dwelled in the depths of Moria, under the dwarven city of Khazad-dûm. It was this very Balrog that claimed the life of King Durin.
According to J.R.R. Tolkien’s mythos, Durin’s Bane managed to live through the War of Wrath and the fall of its master Morgoth, slipping away into the Misty Mountains and concealing itself deep within Caradhras – one of Moria’s mountain peaks.
In the books, the Dwarves, driven by greed, persisted in mining the precious metal Mithril beneath the city of Khazad-dûm, awakening the Balrog from its slumber and causing frequent conflicts between the Dwarves and this fearsome creature.
After the beast killed King Durin VI, the Balrog was dubbed Durin’s Bane.
In my recent cinematic sojourn, I found myself immersed in a world where the stoic Dwarves were forced into exile from their mountainous homeland. The once peaceful abode was now occupied by the menacing Orcs, leaving the fearsome Balrog to dwell within the ominous chasm of the mountain, maintaining its dominion undisturbed.
In J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Fellowship of the Ring,” the fellowship navigates the Mines of Moria, narrowly avoiding an army of Orcs. Later, they attempt to cross the Bridge of Khazad-dûm, but are forced to flee when a Balrog emerges and attacks.
In a clash against Gandalf the Gray, the Balrog plummeted into an abyss, dragging Gandalf along.
In their conflict, they descended through deep underground realms and ultimately the dark underworld of Middle-earth, where Gandalf managed to overpower the Balrog, though he himself perished in the struggle, only to return as Gandalf the White later on.
