Adam Brody Addresses If Dave Rygalski is Gilmore Girls’ Best Boyfriend

As a dedicated fan of Gilmore Girls, I have followed the journey of these characters closely for years, and their lives seem to have seeped into mine just as deeply. The relationship between Lorelai and Luke has always been a favorite, with its underlying tensions adding depth to their undeniable chemistry.

It’s not every teenager that would read the entire Bible in one night for a crush.

In my dedication, I followed in the footsteps of Adam Brody’s Gilmore Girls character, Dave Rygalski. He demonstrated not only what it takes to win over Lane Kim’s mother but surpassed expectations, showing that he was truly deserving of dating her.

Some viewers of the show bestowed the title “best boyfriend” on character Dave throughout the series’ entire seven seasons. However, Adam questions whether Dave spent enough time in the series to genuinely deserve that title.

In an interview for Elle’s Ask Me Anything series with Kristen Bell, he was asked if his costar deserved the title of “perfect boyfriend.” He replied, “No, since he didn’t stay for a long time. We can’t predict how he would have behaved in the long run.

Since Adam’s tenure on the cherished series was brief, spanning just nine episodes across season three, he subsequently landed a role in The O.C. and Dave moved to California for college.

As Adam noted of Dave, “He could have been love bombing her.”

It’s a concept that did not sit well with Gilmore Girls fans.

On Elle’s TikTok, one user expressed that it’s heartbreaking to consider the possibility that Dave Rygalski was love bombing Lane. Meanwhile, another user defended Dave by stating that he went out of his way to ask Lane to the prom as if they were really close.

Discussion about Dave Rygalski being the top choice for best boyfriend of Gilmore Girls’ character Rory Gilmore is nothing new, as this topic has been a long-standing debate since the show ended in 2007. Typically, the argument revolves around which of Rory’s boyfriends was her favorite: Milo Ventimiglia’s Jess, Matt Czuchry’s Logan, or Jared Padalecki’s Dean.

For Keiko, she’s always stayed the course on which was her favorite for her BFF.

She recently shared with TopMob News that she has consistently identified as a fan of Team Jess throughout, and she doesn’t foresee that changing anytime soon.

She went on to say, “It seemed as though Rory and Jess shared the same enthusiasm. They both adored reading and collecting books. The way they’d spar over their differing opinions about literature was genuinely entertaining to observe.

51-year-old character pondered her romantic destiny for her character, which culminated in Lane marrying and having kids with Todd Lowe’s character, Zach. Despite loving Dave and Lane, she’s uncertain if there was any future for them once Lane and Zach got married.

In a very genuine manner, Keiko expressed about Lane, “She claimed to be quite lively and full of life like rock ‘n roll, but I believe she’s honest and trustworthy. However, it seems there’s a lingering sadness or heartache related to that past romance.

Perhaps some whimsical fantasies,” she chuckled. “Whether or not she’d follow through on them, I can’t say, but certainly a friendship is possible.

The setting of the show, Stars Hollow (a place now renowned as one of TV’s most cherished locations), was sparked by an unforeseen trip that Amy Sherman-Palladino took to Washington, Connecticut. Enchanted by the locals she interacted with, customs she observed, and the inn where she stayed, she departed the quaint town with the idea for the series—even incorporating some of the pilot’s dialogue into her concept.

If I could manage to evoke even a fraction of the emotion I experienced while wandering through this enchanting village, Sherman-Palladino expressed to Deseret News, it would simply be magical.

In my journey, I was just a humble student at New York University with a single unrecognized role under my belt, when the opportunity to audition for Rory presented itself. That’s where my story with Gilmore Girls began.

During an interview on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Bledel shared her experience: “I was unwell and a student at NYU. They continually asked me to audition again.” She mentioned going about six times, adding, “I wasn’t a very experienced actor, I didn’t understand the process. I grew somewhat frustrated and showed some attitude. Our boss found it appealing. She said, ‘That’s our girl!’ I responded, ‘Will you call me back?’ to which she replied, ‘I like that, that’s just right.’

3. Gilmore Girls without Lauren Graham as Lorelai? Unimaginable, right? But it almost happened.

In 2016, when I received the script for the Gilmore Girls pilot, I was in New York, residing in a friend’s studio apartment, anxiously awaiting news about whether the series I had recently finished for NBC (Don Rooses’ M.Y.O.B.) would be renewed for another season or canceled.

It turned out advantageous for us that M.Y.O.B. wasn’t chosen, as it enabled Graham to take on the quick-witted main role. This situation was beneficial not only for Graham but also for any other actress who might have been vying for the part.

She described a unique moment of intense recognition when she reads something so captivating that it briefly drives her completely insane. This sensation, she said, is like meeting an old acquaintance combined with the urgent demand for everyone to step aside because it belongs entirely to her.

4. Scott Patterson stood out as the sole contender during the auditions for the character Luke, impressing the casting directors from the get-go with his endearing yet gruff portrayal of the diner owner who eventually became Lorelai’s husband.

According to Jill Anthony, the casting director, Amy stated, “I don’t require meetings with other candidates,” as she shared with Vanity Fair. “She’s absolutely certain of that.

But Patterson never thought he was going to sport Luke’s signature hat and flannel shirts.

On that particular day, the actor shared with Glamour, he had three auditions lined up. This one was his second. He’d only prepared one scene, but he was supposed to have prepped two. So, he walked in and gave it his best shot. By then, he didn’t really care about getting the role because he knew he wouldn’t be cast in Gilmore Girls. The script was exceptional, and they were planning to offer it to established stars, so he figured why waste time? He was running late for another audition and risked a ticket outside, so could he please be excused?

5. Before Jared Padalecki secured the lead role as Rory’s first love, Dean Forester, two other Canadian actors were let go from the show. This was because the character had been modified to be less “unconventional,” as Anthony clarified to Vanity Fair.

6. Ryan Gosling and Chris Pine both tried out for the television show, but it was Gosling who read for a minor role. Interestingly, casting director Jami Rudofsky revealed at the 2015 ATX TV Festival that Gosling’s audition didn’t quite hit the mark.

Meanwhile, it was his father, actor Robert Pine, who got him his initial professional audition. However, Pine can’t recall the role he was up for. In a video interview with W Magazine, he humorously speculated, “I guess I might have been an admirer or something.

7. Despite Melissa McCarthy eventually becoming a major comedy figure in Hollywood, Sherman-Palladino disclosed that she had to argue to cast the actress as the charming and eccentric chef Sookie.

As Sherman-Palladino shared during the reunion panel at the 2015 ATX TV Festival, there were initial doubts about McCarthy because her energy was different. She wasn’t the typical choice for the part. The character description only specified a woman with no specific body type or other requirements. Sherman-Palladino emphasized that she needed someone capable of delivering humor and strong acting performances.

Though Sherman-Palladino recognized McCarthy’s suitability for the role as soon as she entered the room, she admitted, “It was a challenging proposition. It took time… eventually everyone agreed, but it required several episodes to win them over.

8. In the initial episode, Alex Borstein portrayed Sookie, but she had to leave the character due to her commitments to MADtv. Later on, she appeared sporadically as a harpist and stylist in the series. Sherman-Palladino eventually cast Borstein in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, where she won two Emmys for her performance in the Amazon comedy.

10. Initially, Liza Weil tried out for the role of Rory, but producers felt she wasn’t quite right for it. They mentioned that if the show got picked up, they might have something for her in the future. However, as it happened, they didn’t just find a role, they created one – that of Paris, who was initially Rory’s rival and later became her friend. Despite Paris becoming a beloved character, Weil had reservations about playing such a prickly part at first.

In a playful manner, the actor from How to Get Away with Murder quipped about his past self being startled by what was written. He found it hard to believe that they would dare do such a thing! However, now he sees it as quite flattering and is genuinely pleased about it.

11. In response to questions about their apparent chemistry, Graham humorously commented on the talk show Today, saying, “Everyone keeps asking about our great chemistry.” To which he playfully added, “Well, I was literally clinging onto her, making sure she hit her marks because she was so new to acting!

12. Unlike many other actors, Graham and Bledel often ate the food that Lorelai and Rory appeared to consume in the series, a fact well-known by fans who recognized just how much food there was.

“I find it frustrating when actors don’t eat the food on set,” Bledel shared in an interview for the Today show. However, after multiple takes and upset stomachs, Graham admitted they eventually had to use spit buckets to help them continue filming.

13. During the entire duration of the show, Rory Gilmore, portrayed by Alexis Bledel, was in real life relationships with two of her primary on-screen love interests, as reported by casting director Mara Casey.

Back in 2016, she shared with Life & Style magazine that we once made a jest about involving Alexis’ real-life boyfriends in our series. Alexis previously dated Jared and Milo Ventimiglia, and there was also Chris Heuisler, a young New York actor who appeared as a guest character. He was really nice kid.

14. Initially, Sean Gunn was presented as Mick, the DSL installer of Stars Hollow. However, he later became a regular character, playing Kirk, who had a new peculiar job in each episode. But why the change in name? Gunn himself explained that Sherman-Palladino had just forgotten that he already had a name assigned.

15. The WB was considering a spin-off featuring Ventimiglia, using the third season episode “Here Comes the Son” as a trial run for the potential new show. Had it moved forward, “Windward Circle” would have focused on Jess’ life in Venice Beach, California, but unfortunately, the series didn’t make it past the planning stages due to financial constraints.

16. Towards the conclusion of the seventh season of “Gilmore Girls,” discussions arose about chronicling Rory’s life as an adult, following Graham’s decision that she wouldn’t reprise her role.

At some point, Graham made it clear that he wouldn’t return, as he shared with TV Guide. Initially, they considered continuing the project just with Alexis. However, I can’t speak for her, but we had discussions back and forth. In the end, neither of us wanted to proceed without each other.

She added, “They were brainstorming all possibilities. At one point, it seemed like I might just be behind the scenes instead of participating as a cast member.

17. When contract talks hit a roadblock, Stars Hollow was shaken when it became known that Amy Sherman-Palladino and her spouse, Daniel Palladino, would not continue their work for the seventh (and concluding) season.

In retrospect, I must admit that we found ourselves at an impasse when it came to negotiating a fresh agreement with the studio for our project. As I shared then with TV Guide, my partner and I made every effort to secure a multi-year contract, but ultimately, it proved elusive.

She clarified, “In negotiations, there’s always room for flexibility. The request we made might seem substantial, but it wasn’t outlandish or unreasonable. In essence, it was aimed at safeguarding the integrity of our production.

Despite having already brought on their successor, Dave Rosenthal, Sherman-Palladino confessed that relinquishing control was a terrifying ordeal, akin to a disturbing dream.

And she’s since revealed she’s never watched the final season.

18. For quite some time, there were whispers of strained relations between Patterson and Graham on set, even though their on-screen chemistry as Luke and Lorelai was indisputable. Many fans speculated that this tension might have been behind the popular duo’s breakup in a controversial storyline during season six. However, Graham dismissed these rumors in an interview with TV Guide following the show’s conclusion.

She agreed, stating that the situation had been exaggerated. However, she acknowledged her close friendship with David Sutcliffe, who portrayed Rory’s father Christopher. She clarified that people might have assumed she was favoring him due to their friendship, but that wasn’t the case.

Similarly to the fans, Graham felt equally let down and frustrated by the open-ended nature of Luke and Lorelai’s relationship in the show’s initial broadcast.

As an ardent fan, I simply adore the dynamic between Luke and Lorelai. To put it mildly, their storyline didn’t quite wrap up to my satisfaction. During our final season, there was a sense of uncertainty about its conclusion. Sadly, Amy, the creator, wasn’t present for our last season. Therefore, I find myself unable to definitively say whether it ended well because, for me, it didn’t provide a satisfactory resolution.

19. Since she left the series following season six, the show didn’t conclude as Amy Sherman-Palladino initially envisioned. She wasn’t hesitant to express this, and for years, she kept fans intrigued by hinting at the “last four words” that were supposed to mark the end of the Gilmore women’s journey.

In the years that followed their initial series, almost every interview with the Palladinos included questions about those elusive words, but they never revealed any secrets, keeping us eager fans on our toes. As I shared with Entertainment Weekly, I’ve been holding back on disclosing my own ideas because if a movie ever happens, I’ll be diving right back into the storyline, and if I spill the beans now, I’d find myself in quite a pickle!

Back in 2016, when Netflix announced their revival, it became official that the four-episode series would conclude with the highly anticipated phrase consisting of just four words. Here’s where you can find out more details about it, indeed it was worth the anticipation!

20. Edward Herrmann and Kelly Bishop portrayed Lorelai’s refined yet affectionate parents Richard and Emily Gilmore. The duo developed a strong bond off-screen, with Herrmann’s spouse, Star Herrmann, jokingly calling Bishop his “second wife.” Sadly, Herrmann passed away in 2014 at the age of 71 following a fight against brain cancer. In the days leading up to his death, his wife granted Bishop permission to visit him.

She shared with Vanity Fair that she was the sole individual who had accompanied them, a matter of significance to both himself and herself.

At the ATX TV Festival’s cast reunion panel, a seat on the stage was kept empty in memory of Herrmann, who was described by Bishop as “wonderful, poignant, and unexpected.
