Starfield is “The Best Game We’ve Ever Made” in Many Ways, Says Design Director

As a longtime fan of Bethesda Game Studios, I’ve been through the highs and lows of their games, from the post-apocalyptic wasteland of Fallout to the fantastical realms of The Elder Scrolls. So when they announced Starfield, I was both excited and skeptical. After all, it promised to be something “totally different,” a bold claim for a studio known for its iconic franchises.

Bethesda Game Studios has debuted its initial expansion for the game Starfield titled Shattered Space. This new adventure transports players to the secluded world of House Va’ruun following a significant event. It has been more than a year since the launch of this space-oriented role-playing game, and Design Director Emil Pagliarulo spoke with GamesRadar about it.

He acknowledged that it may not appeal to everyone’s taste and jokingly mentioned “Fans are absolutely thrilled about The Elder Scrolls 6.” Nevertheless, Pagliarulo also stated, “In many aspects, Starfield is the most challenging project Bethesda has ever undertaken.

As a passionate enthusiast, I can’t help but express my excitement about the extraordinary endeavor we undertook. We dared to create a game that would seamlessly blend into an Xbox console, offering an unprecedented, immersive space simulation RPG experience, so vast and engaging it could only be imagined by dreamers like us. And amazingly, we managed to bring this vision to life, making Starfield a true testament to technical prowess. It’s not just the best game we’ve ever made; for us, it embodies a distinct personality that stands side by side with our beloved creations, Fallout and Elder Scrolls.

Since its release, Starfield has sparked a lot of conversation among critics and gamers alike. While many reviewers have highly commended it (we gave it a perfect score in our critique), player feedback has been somewhat divided. Following the launch, Bethesda has rolled out several updates, enriching the game with additional elements such as a 60 FPS mode on the Xbox Series X and an exploration vehicle called Rev-8 to traverse planets.

In a different evaluation, “Shattered Space” has received a “Mixed” score on Steam, with just 55% of user reviews expressing satisfaction (the debate over paid Creations didn’t make things easier). On the other hand, “Starfield” is facing more criticism with a “Mostly Negative” rating. However, good news for “Starfield” fans: it’s set to release its second expansion next year, which might be the anticipated “Starborn”. There’s even a possibility of annual expansions. Keep an eye out for further updates on that front.
