A Major Walking Dead Death Was a Last-Minute Change

As a seasoned gamer and long-time reader of The Walking Dead comics, I can attest that Robert Kirkman knows how to deliver a shocking twist. Abraham Ford’s death in issue #98 was a gut punch that still resonates today. It’s not every day you see a character like Abraham, who was as tough as nails, get taken down by an arrow through the brain.

Heed this notice: This discussion includes plot revelations from The Walking Dead Deluxe #98. In the gripping world of The Walking Dead, demise can strike swiftly, as seen when Denise (Merritt Wever) on the series received Dwight’s (Austin Amelio) crossbow bolt meant for Abraham (Michael Cudlitz), and it was Abe who met a similar fate to Glenn (Steven Yeun) at Negan’s (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) hands, mirroring the comics. And just like Glenn, who had once cheated death by the grace of creator Robert Kirkman, Abraham almost managed an escape from his own death scene. However, fate had other plans for him.

In issue #98 of The Walking Dead, published back in 2012, Abraham and Eugene team up for a venture to gather materials needed to produce ammunition, as tension rises with Negan and the Saviors. Following an assault on Rick’s group consisting of Carl, Andrea, Michonne, and Glenn while traveling, Abraham and Eugene are suddenly caught off guard in an ambush orchestrated by Dwight during his initial appearance.

In a surprising turn of events, Abraham receives Eugene’s permission to pursue a romantic relationship with Rosita, only to be fatally wounded by an arrow through his brain moments later. His lifeless body is then devoured by walkers before Rick and Andrea can recover it. This unexpected demise for Abraham took place in the last instance. Although issue #97’s final page depicted Saviors stalking Abe and Eugene, Robert Kirkman had no intention of having Abraham die in issue #98 when he began planning the second issue of the six-part “Something to Fear” storyline.

In a column titled “Cutting Room Floor” in this week’s The Walking Dead Deluxe #98, Kirkman expresses that Abraham’s death might be his favorite among all series deaths. He admits to frequently finding himself in tight spots, even with a broad vision of how the issues would unfold. As quoted, “I prefer having as much track laid ahead as possible, so I’m always plotting contingencies.” In other words, he’d think, ‘if I reach issue No. 30, maybe this,’ or ‘if I reach issue No. 50, maybe that.’ He keeps his plans flexible, ensuring he has options to build on, while also retaining the freedom to act impulsively and do whatever he desires for each issue, regardless of how unconventional it might be. This, he explains, was one such instance.

Initially, Kirkman hadn’t considered killing Abraham in the story before writing issue No. 97. He penned the climactic scene of that issue blindly, unaware of what was to follow. However, when he came to outline the plot for this current issue, he found it lacked excitement. Originally, Kirkman had planned a thrilling action sequence where Abraham and Eugene raced back to Alexandria for safety, and together they defended against Dwight’s group. But he felt that scenario was dull. He had many plans for Eugene, but fewer ideas for Abraham, no grand schemes ahead, and fortunately, Abraham wasn’t featured on any upcoming covers at the time. So, eliminating Abraham seemed like a suitable choice in the storyline.

Abraham was susceptible to death, and his demise in issue #98 significantly influenced Holly, Rosita, Eugene, Rick, and sparked numerous storyline advancements, which is typically a positive indication. Kirkman explains, “I admired the character; he was one of my favorites… but sometimes you have to crack eggs to keep a comic engaging.
