James Gunn Teases Creature Commandos Star's Role in Superman and Peacemaker Season 2

As a dedicated fan of DC Universe, I can’t help but feel my heart race with anticipation as I delve deeper into the intriguing world that James Gunn and Peter Safran are meticulously crafting. The upcoming projects promise to be nothing short of spectacular, and the first on the horizon is the much-anticipated animated series, Creature Commandos.

James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe is laying down a considerable foundation, with movies and television shows in development for the upcoming years. The initial project to debut on the new DC Studios roster is an animated series called “Creature Commandos,” and it appears we’ll soon see more of one of the show’s characters. In a recent chat with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn revealed that Frank Grillo will reprise his role as Rick Flag Sr. in live-action, appearing not only in the upcoming “Superman” film but also in the second season of “Peacemaker.” These appearances promise to offer a distinctive glimpse into the character’s development.

In my excitement, I must say that the character Frank has been shaping is absolutely captivating. As James Gunn clarified, this intriguing figure is also present in Superman, but truly shines in Peacemaker. In fact, he plays a pivotal role in that series and will continue to do so in season 2. This gives us the unique opportunity to explore this character from various perspectives, as he proves to be anything but straightforward.

Gunn emphasized that this character isn’t just a simple good guy; rather, we’ll see various aspects of his personality. He’s a complex moral figure. I’ve known Grillo for some time, and I’ve long wanted to collaborate with him. When I took over the studio, he was one of the first people I reached out to, saying ‘we’ll find something interesting for you,’ and now he can be found everywhere.

According to Gunn, it’s important for the actors to adapt to various genres, and Frank seems particularly skilled at this. He excels not only in the comedic aspects of “Creature Commandos,” but also shines in the dramatic roles of “Peacemaker” and “Superman.

What Is Creature Commandos About?

As a devoted fan, I follow the thrilling adventures of Creature Commandos, a covert squad composed of imprisoned beasts, handpicked for tasks that are too perilous for ordinary humans. When all other options have been exhausted… they’re your final, least desirable choice. The cast features Steve Agee as Economos, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana, Anya Chalotra as Circe, Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Sean Gunn as GI Robot & Weasel, David Harbour as Frankenstein, Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorus, Indira Varma as The Bride, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. This electrifying series is the brainchild of James Gunn, who also serves as a writer and executive producer. Drawing inspiration from DC characters, Creature Commandos is produced by DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation. Peter Safran, Dean Lorey, and Sam Register are additional executive producers, with Rick Morales overseeing production.

Lorey shared with ComicBook during an exclusive interview that the production process for this project was unique due to James Gunn having already written all the scripts before filming began. This is different from my usual role where I am a writer, even if I’m running the show. Normally, we would still be in the script-writing phase at this point. But with ready-to-go scripts, production started sooner than expected. Additionally, we were fortunate to secure an exceptional voice cast, including Harley, Kite Man, and the Creature Commandos. Working with James, who had a clear vision for the show and is deeply familiar with the world, has been a delight. I believe it will be a standout release, though people might not yet realize its potential. It’s truly fantastic, and we are incredibly proud of it.

Creature Commandos will premiere exclusively on Max on Thursday, December 5th.
