Kevin Smith talks Shannen Doherty and a Mallrats sequel….

As a film enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the cinematic world of Kevin Smith, I can’t help but feel a deep sense of nostalgia and anticipation when it comes to ‘Mallrats’. The news of a potential sequel, ‘Twilight of the Mallrats’, brings forth a mix of excitement and sadness due to the loss of Shannen Doherty.

Kevin Smith, the writer-director behind the recently released film ‘The 4.30 Movie’, has been musing about a sequel for one of his earlier projects, ‘Mallrats’. While Shannen Doherty’s passing might initially suggest that the idea is put on hold, Smith proposes a creative solution that would honor the late actress as well.

Upon learning about Shannen’s passing, my initial thought was “That’s it.” Her character, Rene, wasn’t just a minor addition; she played a significant role in the movie alongside Brodie [Jason Lee]. When I heard that Shannen had passed away, I assumed that the film would never be made and for good reason. However, surprisingly, over the past month, there have been strange glimmers of optimism and potential discussions about the project. I’m not jumping to conclusions, but it seems like there might just be a way forward, if you catch my drift.

If Universal gives the green light, the question then becomes, “What action should we take next?” Interestingly, Sarah Michelle Gellar, who was Shannen’s closest friend, and I collaborated on Masters of the Universe: Revelation. Remarkably, when Sarah and I first met in person, our conversation revolved around her friendship with Shannen because they were quite close. I asked Sarah about their first meeting, to which she replied that they had crossed paths during the auditions for Mallrats. I was taken aback as I hadn’t known this! Sarah revealed that she had auditioned for the role of Trish in Mallrats around 30 years ago. I was astonished and exclaimed, “You auditioned for Mallrats?!” To which she responded, “Yes, I was a child. I was up for the part.” I was floored by this revelation! If there’s a chance we can make Twilight of the Mallrats, I would ask Sarah to step in for Shannen. This would be significant for her due to their friendship, and it would be beneficial for our movie as she could bring Shannen’s warmth to the role. It might not replace having Shannen there, but it would certainly come close.

That would be incredibly fantastic and a bit crazy. If only Shannen were still around to experience it with us, just as we had planned. The last conversation I had with her was on her “Let’s Be Clear” podcast. I went to her home in Malibu to record in December, and at the end of our session, she sent me a text. Let me quickly locate that text because it perfectly captures Shannen’s spirit. (Smith retrieves his iPhone.)

We were discussing the possibility of meeting with Universal to discuss a sequel for Mallrats. She suggested contacting Universal and Jason Blum via messages, as I had mentioned that Blumhouse might take it on. I agreed, and she expressed hopefulness. We exchanged affirmative comments, and she playfully suggested a meeting at Universal. I confirmed we could do this, and she hinted at using her personal connection (implying her battle with cancer). She added a crying-laughing emoji, indicating a mix of emotions. It would be great if it works out. Making the movie has personal significance for me, but now there’s an extra motivation. We know to whom the film will be dedicated – that’s for sure.

Sarah Michelle Gellar has shown enthusiasm for a Mallrats sequel, viewing it as a way to honor her dear friend.
