What The Rings of Power needs to do with Sauron in season 3

As a lifelong fan of Middle-earth and its enigmatic characters, I find myself utterly captivated by the masterful portrayal of Sauron in The Rings of Power. The series has brilliantly showcased his villainy, not just as a looming threat but as a cunning manipulator who can corrupt even the most noble hearts.

Less devoted fans of The Lord of the Rings might not have fully understood the evil nature of Sauron.

In Peter Jackson’s movies, the Dark Lord appears as a significant menace, indeed a terrifying one, but he’s essentially represented as an ominous presence in the sky – more like a giant eye. However, it’s the characters who follow his orders throughout the films that mainly carry out the danger and wicked deeds. What makes this villain so sinister is his ability to corrupt others, a concept that The Rings of Power clearly grasps.

Throughout the second season of the Amazon Prime Video show, audiences have now observed the immense power of the Great Deceiver unfold. As he stood by Celebrimbor, disguised as Annatar, Sauron demonstrated an extraordinary ability to manipulate situations.

Instead of directly coercing the Lord of Eregion to forge increasingly more rings under false pretenses, manipulating him into believing it was necessary, and deceiving those around them that Celebrimbor was becoming unstable, Sauron demonstrated an ability to sow chaos in Middle-earth without resorting to overt acts of violence.

Given that he’s caused significant damage among the Elves and propelled the Dwarves towards self-destruction, it seems Sauron may focus his efforts on the Men, particularly those residing in Númenor. The indications appear to suggest this direction.

Indeed, he’s about to craft another powerful ring, the One Ring destined to create much trouble for a specific group known as the Fellowship. However, he won’t require an entire season to accomplish this, especially since there are more gifts to bestow. Now that Sauron controls the Nine Rings, his focus shifts towards subjugating humans under his control.

What The Rings of Power needs to do with Sauron in season 3

With the Elves nursing their wounds and the Dwarves of Khazad-dûm remaining isolated, Númenor finds itself in a vulnerable position, potentially ripe for Sauron’s conquest. The events from season 2 surrounding that island suggest an impending doom, and it appears that only a minor nudge from Sauron might be enough to send the fragile society spiraling into total collapse.

The prospect of a war with the Elves is imminent, yet it appears that Gil-galad and his allies require time to strategize their next moves, as hinted by the events in season 2’s finale. Thus, it’s possible that they might take a moment to regroup and prepare for a potential battle against Sauron in Mordor during season 3. Meanwhile, while this is happening, it wouldn’t be unexpected if Sauron were to utilize his time by crafting the One Ring and dispersing the Nine Rings among Men, as suggested in the narrative of season 3.

People familiar with Tolkien’s stories understand that Númenorians are expected to become involved in the struggle against Sauron, and even succeed in capturing him. Yet, given Sauron’s cunning nature, it is unlikely that things will end favorably for Ar-Pharazôn and his allies.

Without a doubt, Sauron will exploit Pharazôn’s arrogance, his hunger for power, and his increasing disregard for the Valar. In much the same way as Celebrimbor was influenced in season 2, it seems likely that Pharazôn will fall under the sway of the Dark Lord, a fate which could ultimately bring about the downfall of Númenor.

It’s important that the show reveals Sauron’s true nature fully, leading us to a stage where it becomes essential for characters like Galadriel, Elrond, Isildur, and Elendil, who we’ve encountered in this part of Middle-earth’s story so far, to unite against him.

In essence, The Rings of Power is leading us towards the point where Isildur will sever the One Ring from Sauron’s grasp. However, for viewers to fully appreciate this moment, the series must continue exploring the aspects that make Sauron an exceptional antagonist.

As a passionate moviegoer, I can’t help but express my anticipation for a darker, more complex narrative. I yearn for a tale where manipulation and corruption are prevalent, as powerful forces strive to restore Middle-earth, using fear and force whenever necessary. And oh, the climax! The moment when that character transforms into nothing more than an all-seeing eye in the sky – now that’s a sight I can’t wait to witness.
