As a longtime fan of Dragon Ball Z and its iconic characters, I must say that the news of Toru Furuya’s departure from the series has left me feeling a mix of emotions. On one hand, it’s disheartening to see such a beloved voice actor leave the franchise over personal circumstances. On the other hand, I can’t help but feel a twinge of excitement for Ryota Suzuki, who will be taking on the role of Yamcha in Dragon Ball Daima.
The upcoming “Dragon Ball Daima” series is expected to reintroduce the Z-Fighters and their original voice actors this month, but not all actors are coming back for the new anime version. As the characters will be made smaller in a childlike form, the original voice cast is still set to participate in the sequel series. Regrettably, due to a significant controversy, Toru Furuya has had to step down from several anime roles recently, and this includes his role as Yamcha in “Dragon Ball Daima”, with a new voice actor taking over for him.
If you haven’t heard about the scandal involving voice actor Toru Furuya, it revolves around a multi-year romantic entanglement he had with an anonymous fan. In a public apology issued by Furuya earlier this year, he admitted to the affair that lasted from approximately September 2015 until last September. He was drawn to her because of her sincere support for him, and he regrettably initiated the relationship himself. During their time together, they had one disagreement, and in a moment of poor judgment, Furuya accidentally raised his hand during the argument. He now acknowledges that this action, as a responsible adult and human being, was the most reprehensible thing he could have done.
As a gamer putting myself in Furuya’s shoes, I acknowledge that I made an irreversible mistake by pushing the woman to undergo an abortion. I deeply regret the emotional and physical pain I inflicted upon her. I can’t express enough my remorse for shattering the faith of my fans who have stood by me throughout the years, let them down, hurt them, and damaged my reputation. I also realize that I violated the trust of everyone involved, causing them unnecessary hardship.
Yamcha’s New Voice Actor
On their official site, it was announced that starting from the premiere of Dragon Ball Daima on October 11, 2024, Ryota Suzuki will be stepping into the shoes of Yamcha, a character previously portrayed by Toru Furuya in the Dragon Ball series.
Apart from leaving the Dragon Ball universe, Furuya has also parted ways with other prominent anime series like One Piece and Detective Conan. In One Piece, he was known for portraying Sabo, the brother of Monkey D. Luffy. Within Detective Conan, Furuya lent his voice to the character Rei Furuya in the long-running anime show Case Closed.
Furuya’s History With Yamcha
Similar to other voice actors involved with Dragon Ball, Toru Furuya has been portraying the character Yamcha since the anime’s initial adaptation. Originally cast in the Dragon Ball series, Furuya has provided the voice for the sand bandit over several decades and held significant roles in various anime productions. Besides One Piece and Detective Conan, Toru has also voiced characters like Amuro in Mobile Suit Gundam, Seiya in Saint Seiya, Tuxedo Mask in Sailor Moon, and Mewtwo in Pokemon: Detective Pikachu.
Ryota Suzuki, the newcomer taking over for Foruya, is also recognized for his roles in various anime. Notably, he played Ryusui Nanami in “Dr. Stone”, Mizuro in “Tokyo Ghoul:re”, and Arbus in “The Seven Deadly Sins”.
