In the Season 2 finale of “The Rings of Power,” the Elves of Middle-earth engaged in their last stand to safeguard their magnificent city Eregion against Adar and his Orc horde. The Fall of Eregion, as depicted in this show, is a significant event from J.R.R. Tolkien’s Second Age of Middle-earth that carries even greater weight due to the adaptations made by “The Rings of Power.” This season’s narrative intertwines the fall of Eregion more closely with the creation of the “Rings of Power,” making the battle’s result all the more crucial. As a consequence, the Elves are forced to embark on a new chapter in their history.

In the Season 2 finale of “The Rings of Power, titled ‘Shadow and Flame’, Sauron (played by Charlie Vickers) succeeds in locating and seizing the nine magical rings forged by Elven blacksmith Celebrimbor, which were intended for the human race. In a close call, he nearly kills Lady Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) during this hunt. With the rings now in his possession, Sauron slays Adar and enlists the orc army to serve him. In his aftermath, he allows Eregioni to be consumed by flames.
Indubitably, the Elves find themselves at an all-time low: their esteemed city lies in ruins; Celebrimbor’s lifetime of remarkable creations have been obliterated, and Galadriel stirs from the brink of death to discover a despondent populace. High-King Gil-galad (Benjamin Walker) faces a crucial decision: “the sword or the shield,” meaning whether Elves should retreat into hiding and fortify their defenses against the encroaching darkness – or rally their spirits and confront Sauron. Galadriel delivers a speech urging light as the beacon that will enable them to withstand the shadow, and Gil-galad lifts his sword in affirmation of this mission.
The Rings of Power Reveals The Origin of Rivendell
In Tolkien’s legendarium, Rivendell was constructed by Elrond Half-elven following his unsuccessful defense against the siege on Eregion. Elrond and the remaining Elves of Eregion subsequently withdrew towards the north, finding refuge in the river valleys, cascading waterfalls, and rolling hills that make up Rivendell, nestled within a gorge on the River Bruinen. There, they set up a fortified settlement.
In the Third Age, during the timeline of Lord of the Rings, Rivendale had transformed into a tranquil sanctuary, welcoming elves and other travelers traversing the northern regions. Bilbo Baggins once journeyed there with Thorin II Oakenshield’s Dwarf Company en route to the Lonely Mountain. Many decades later, Frodo Baggins and his fellow hobbits found themselves in Rivendell, where the Fellowship of the Ring – a unique alliance between hobbits, men, elves, and dwarves – was established.
In its potential third season, “The Rings of Power” series enticingly hints at unveiling not just the formation of Rivendell, but also its initial skirmishes with Sauron – one of numerous thrilling aspects the show could deliver if renewed.
