Yellowjackets: Who is the Antler Queen? The Mysterious Figure Explained

As a seasoned gamer and avid binge-watcher of television series, I have to say that the enigmatic figure known as the Antler Queen in Yellowjackets has left me utterly captivated. Having devoured both seasons on different streaming platforms, I find myself intrigued by this chilling symbol and its connection to the wilderness and the characters’ survival instincts.

The initial season of “Yellowjackets” is currently available for streaming on Netflix, expanding the reach of the popular Showtime series to more viewers. The captivating tale of a band of teenage girls who survive a plane crash in the wilderness during the 1990s and how that experience affects their lives years later is now accessible to a wider audience. Additionally, this means that newcomers are being introduced to some of the series’ major mysteries, such as the enigma surrounding the Antler Queen. But who or what exactly is the Antler Queen? Let’s delve into the details and try to unravel the puzzle.

In the initial episode of the series, we encounter a mysterious character known as the Antler Queen. This enigmatic figure is depicted presiding over an eerie ceremony where a woman in a nightgown dashes through the forest and ends up trapped. Men wearing Yellowjackets attire, animal skins, and masks then haul her away. The young woman’s tragic end is witnessed by the Antler Queen, yet her true identity remains hidden. What makes this unsettling scene even more chilling is that we never get to see her face.

In the “Doomcoming” episode, the survivors host a makeshift homecoming celebration in the wilderness, but things take a turn when all members, except Jackie, unknowingly consume hallucinogenic mushrooms. This leads to each member experiencing unusual visions. The females decorate themselves with natural items, and Lottie dons a crown resembling antlers, giving her an uncanny resemblance to the Antler Queen. However, Lottie’s chilling attire becomes even more disquieting as the series has hinted at her peculiar bond with nature, demonstrated by her ability to kill a bear and present its heart on an altar.

As a gamer, I can say that by the end of Yellowjackets Season 1, they didn’t quite show who the spine-tingling Antler Queen truly was. The enigma surrounding the symbol only thickened in Season 2, especially when we meet grown-up Lottie portrayed by Simone Kessell and witness someone being selected as the Antler Queen. While there were significant advancements in Season 2 that I hope will continue into Season 3, the true nature of the Antler Queen remains a puzzle, even for the cast themselves, who’ve admitted it’s something they haven’t fully figured out yet.

In 2023, Kessell recalled asking, “Is the Antler Queen symbolic, metaphorical, or real?”, to which there was no immediate response.

She went on to explain that the concept could be anything we choose, yet for her, the Antler Queen symbolized a common part within us all, providing strength and resilience among these women as they endured the wilderness. This was her understanding of it. Despite having numerous questions, she maintained composure.
