As a movie enthusiast with a soft spot for horror films and a keen interest in special effects, I must say that Chris Nash’s debut feature, “In A Violent Nature,” has left me both horrified and exhilarated. The title couldn’t be more fitting as the on-screen violence is nothing short of chilling.
Under the direction of Chris Nash, who has experience in special effects and has previously made several short films, we now have his first full-length feature film titled “In A Violent Nature.” The title fits perfectly as the on-screen killings are truly remarkable. Following a brief stint in theaters, the Blu-ray version of “In A Violent Nature” is now available for purchase.
The movie revolves around an event where a locket is discovered in a fallen fire tower hidden within the woods, containing the decaying remains of Johnny, a vengeful spirit fueled by a 60-year old crime. As his body is revived, he becomes obsessed with retrieving this locket. The resurrected creature, once human, now undead and powerful, zeroes in on a group of vacationing teenagers who took the locket, intending to kill them systematically, one by one, as part of his quest for it – along with anyone else who gets in his path. Check out our review HERE.
As you proceed, a new horror protagonist meticulously navigates through the forest, searching for the missing teens. In a chilling echo of the infamous video nasties from the early ’80s, particularly the notorious ‘pretzel’ kill, he systematically butchers them in grisly fashion, almost paying tribute to these iconic horror films. Remarkably, despite its gruesome and at times, exceptionally violent nature, this is one of the top horror movies of the year, and while we use the term ‘enjoyed’ cautiously, it can indeed be appreciated for its skillful execution and terrifying atmosphere.
Its a film that almost didn’t make it when the actor who played Johnny succumbed to illness a couple of weeks into the shoot. But though the film is full of shocking brutality the disc itself is disappointingly empty containing only the film, the settings menu and that’s it. Not even a trailer. It’s a disc crying out for Nash’s commentary and a featurette on the prosthetic effects. Aside from the years other great horror film, ‘Longlegs’ , Nash and the monstrous Johnny stand out above most of the years horror films and we’re first in the queue for a sequel.
