As a movie enthusiast with a penchant for Stephen King adaptations and a soft spot for dystopian worlds, I am thrilled about the upcoming reunion of Glen Powell and Katy O’Brian in “The Running Man.” The news of Katy’s casting sent me down memory lane to their electrifying chemistry in “Twisters,” a summer blockbuster that left audiences begging for more.
Glen Powell’s “The Running Man” movie is shaping up to be a reunion of sorts for the cast of “Twisters”. According to recent reports from “The Hollywood Reporter”, Katy O’Brian has been added to the cast for the upcoming adaptation of Stephen King’s novel with the same title. The film, directed by Edgar Wright, who is known for his work on “Baby Driver” and “Shaun of the Dead”, is based on King’s 1982 dystopian novel published under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. Production for this movie is scheduled to begin in November.
In a future world marred by oppression, people participate in brutal television games controlled by a totalitarian regime to keep the populace pacified. When a destitute father needs money for his ailing daughter’s treatment, he signs up for the bloodthirsty game show called “The Running Man,” where teams of assassins chase down contestants. The longer a contestant stays alive and avoids capture, the more wealth they accumulate. However, our protagonist defies all rules, aiming to uncover the show’s hidden truths. In this upcoming adaptation, Powell takes on the role of the desperate father while O’Brian portrays one of the contestants. The story has earlier been loosely based on a 1987 film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as the central character.
In a previous statement, Powell expressed his excitement about working on a project with director Edgar Wright, saying it’s been delightful exchanging ideas about scripts and how they both share a deep admiration for Stephen King’s book. He recently discovered that Edgar Wright was listed as his top choice among directors he wanted to collaborate with in 2008 when moving to LA. Powell considers himself an ardent fan of Edgar Wright, making the opportunity to work together now especially cool.
Recently, O’Brian was seen alongside Powell in the blockbuster summer film “Twisters”. She also starred alongside Kristen Stewart in “Love Lies Bleeding”. In television, she has previously been a part of The CW’s “Black Lightning” and Disney+’s “The Mandalorian”.
The Running Man is set to open in theaters November 21, 2025.
