Dynamic Duo: How Does the New DC Movie Fit Into James Gunn's DCU?

As a gamer who’s spent countless hours navigating the gritty streets of Gotham City alongside the Dark Knight and his Robin sidekicks, I can’t help but feel a surge of nostalgia at the announcement of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s upcoming animated film, Dynamic Duo.

The influence of James Gunn and Peter Safran over the DC universe is expanding, as their joint leadership of DC Studios has led to some unforeseen film and TV productions. One of these unexpected projects, announced by Gunn himself this week, is an animated movie titled “Dynamic Duo.” This film will be produced by Swaybox Animation Studio, who plan to use a blend of animation, puppetry, and CGI to narrate the origin story of the first two Robins, Dick Grayson and Jason Todd. Fans are thrilled about this project, but it has also sparked some curiosity. One of the main questions that have arisen is where this movie fits into Gunn and Safran’s broader plans for the DC universe. At this stage, no definite answers have been given, but there are a few potential scenarios.

It’s been a topic of discussion among fans whether the “Dynamic Duo” belongs to the main universe of DC Studios (DCU), which will unite multiple films and TV shows under one consistent narrative. Although most projects announced for the DCU are live-action, it’s set to start with an animated series, December’s “Creature Commandos.” This suggests that the “Dynamic Duo” might be part of the DCU canon, but given the extensive time required for animation development, this could pose a creative challenge.

It’s worth noting that some speculate Dynamic Duo might be linked to Matt Reeves’ Batman saga, given he serves as an executive producer on the show. If true, this would be surprising since Dynamic Duo is a sequel to the Batman trilogy, but it could offer a unique perspective of the gritty, live-action universe. It’s also worth mentioning that Robert Pattinson, who stars in The Batman, has shown potential for delivering quirky voice performances.

That leaves us with a third, and arguably most likely, option — that Swaybox is a standalone feature film that will potentially be under the DC Elseworlds banner. Gunn and Safran have confirmed plans to use the banner on new and existing projects, ranging from Teen Titans GO! to Merry Little Batman and beyond. There are already rumors of a Jurassic League animated film being in development at DC Studios, which — given its entire pitch being another universe’s dinosaur Justice League — would probably be under DC Elseworlds as well. It’s easy to imagine Dynamic Duo joining that roster, allowing the project to thrive as its own entity (or maybe even its own pocket franchise, if it is successful). Given the distinct animation style Swaybox is bringing to the project, it would certainly provide DC’s answer to the recent juggernauts of Sony’s Spider-Verse animated movies and Paramount’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, without having to adhere to any specific canon. Either way, there’s a good chance that Dynamic Duo will end up being something special to the future of the DC brand.

Dynamic Duo does not currently have a release date.
