Yuri Lowenthal and Tara Platt Reveal New Details About Topsy McGee and the Scarab of Solomon

As a die-hard fan of voice acting and comic books, I am thrilled to see powerhouse duo Yuri Lowenthal and Tara Platt stepping into the world of graphic novels with their original creation, Topsy McGee and the Scarab of Solomon. Having been captivated by their performances in beloved franchises such as Naruto, Fire Emblem, and Spider-Man, it’s a delight to see them bring their storytelling prowess to a new medium.

Yuri Lowenthal and Tara Platt, a talented duo known for their storytelling prowess, have made quite an impact in the realm of voice acting. Yuri is renowned for lending his voice to Spider-Man in various productions, while Tara’s work can be found in popular anime and games like Naruto and Fire Emblem. The pair are now venturing into the comic book industry with their own original graphic novel titled “Topsy McGee and the Scarab of Solomon“. This action-packed tale will debut on Amazon on October 9th, introducing readers to Topsy, a fearless adventurer who journeys across the globe alongside her husband Captain Sean.

Before the launch of OGN, Lowenthal and Platt shared insights about the origin of the idea, their initial efforts in developing the character, and the anticipated storyline with ComicBook.

Lowenthal described it as a tale of daring exploits, drawing parallels to the spirit of Indiana Jones, but set in a Victorian England that exists outside our known timeline.

Initially, the Topsy McGee persona served as a way for the couple to pass time amicably during quiet spells, such as when they were waiting at bus stops. As Platt put it, “We’d just make up stories to tell each other whenever we went out and about.” The development of Topsy’s character was inspired by Platt but with a twist: “If I were more quick-witted and capable of coming up with clever retorts.

The Topsy character started to materialize when Lowenthal requested an artist to create the first artwork of it as a birthday gift for Platt during a convention. This is where Lowenthal declared that the character came alive. Afterward, the couple sought ways to develop a story they could present globally. At first, they worked on a short script and pitched the idea as a live-action TV series. However, Lowenthal mentioned that television wasn’t receptive to steampunk at the time. As a result, they opted to create a comic book instead.

Lowenthal stated, “We gained a unique level of control when we wrote the stories for our comic book.” As kids, both authors were deeply immersed in comics; Lowenthal loved superheroes while Platt grew up on Archie and Scrooge McDuck. The pair’s creative process involved brainstorming ideas together before selecting those that best suited their desired story tone. However, the transition from being avid comic readers to actual creators came with its own challenges. “We didn’t have a phone book full of contacts in this field,” Platt admitted.

Following discussions with creative duo Comfort & Adam (responsible for production, editing, cover design, and colors in issue 3), Lowenthal and Platt gained a clearer understanding of the comic creation workflow. With the goal of publishing a coherent story, they opted to compile the three finished issues into a three-part graphic novel, where each issue is illustrated by a different artistic team. This graphic novel will be available for print on demand via Amazon. The narrative concluded in this collection serves as a starting point for more Topsy adventures in the future.

Lowenthal mentioned, “This tale embodies the kind of narratives we aspire to create, and I fervently hope it’s not the last one featuring these characters. It’s not a case of ‘we’ve finished their story and can now explore new tales.’ Instead, our aim is to keep spinning yarns set in this world with these intriguing personalities.

Platt mentioned, “Absolutely, and whether it sticks to its current genre or format, or perhaps transforms into an animated series is an option we’re considering given our extensive background in voiceovers and animation. If it doesn’t take a live-action route, this could become an animated series. There’s potential for tales featuring this courageous heroine. It’s entertaining with a touch of humor, and delves into history to help us understand the present better. Our world is in a bit of turmoil at the moment, and I believe that by incorporating history and steampunk elements, we can shed light on our current situation in a way that makes it more palatable.

In their writing, Lowenthal and Platt aim to mirror real-world events, but readers should anticipate a touch of lightness. They mention that Lowenthal prefers goodness triumphing over evil, which he says is central to most of his creative work and life choices. The outcome for Topsy and Captain Sean in their story can be observed by exploring the graphic novel, “Topsy McGee and the Scarab of Solomon,” available on Amazon.
