In August 2023, Ruby, who previously shared her family experiences in Utah with her now-separated partner Kevin Franke and their children via the YouTube channel “8 Passengers,” along with her business associate Jodi Hildebrant, were both taken into custody for accusations of severe child abuse. The duo are co-founders of ConneXions, a service providing parental guidance and counseling.
The two females admitted their guilt on all four charges of second-degree felony severe child abuse and received concurrent terms of imprisonment, with each sentence ranging from one to fifteen years. However, this combined term is subject to a maximum of thirty years according to the laws of Utah.
“Finally,” Shari had posted to her Instagram Stories after her mother’s arrest, later adding, “Me and my family are so glad justice is being served. We’ve been trying to tell the police and CPS for years about this, and so glad they finally decided to step up. Kids are safe, but there’s a long road ahead. Please keep them in your prayers and also respect their privacy.”
The allegations of abuse against Ruby and Kevin stem from incidents involving their two younger children, aged 13 and 11 now. Utah authorities responded to a call concerning a starving child and found the Frankes’ youngest son who seemed severely undernourished with visible open wounds and duct tape around his limbs according to an affidavit obtained by NBC News.
He had climbed out of a window in Jodi’s home to try and find help, and authorities later found his little sister “petrified” and alone inside an empty closet in the house, the document said.

In a statement, Utah authorities disclosed that they had been alerted about a malnourished child. Upon arrival, the child, who looked alarmingly thin and undernourished with open sores and duct tape on the limbs, was discovered. The child was then rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
The individual was later determined to be the 12-year-old son of YouTuber Ruby Franke, as stated in an affidavit obtained by NBC News. He had reportedly exited Jodi Hildebrant’s home through a window and then sought help from a neighbor, as detailed in the document.
Later on, police conducted a search at a neighboring residence, revealing another child who appeared to be in a state of severe malnutrition, identical to the first child. This child too was subsequently hospitalized, as stated in the press release.
Later on, it was clarified by authorities that they found Ruby’s nine-year-old child trembling alone inside a vacant wardrobe in Jodi’s residence, based on information disclosed by the Washington County Attorney’s Office.
In Utah, Ruby was apprehended for severe child abuse allegations, and Jodi, who founded a life coaching service called ConneXions in 2007, was also implicated. This service, as described by former clients to NBC News, had characteristics akin to a cult, being based on principles similar to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

She added, “To my dear children, you are an extension of myself. In the past, I misunderstood what was dark as light and what was wrong as right. For you, I would give up anything in this world. Unfortunately, I took away from you everything that was comforting, secure, and wholesome.
The authorities made public her terrifying diary excerpts, where she detailed her alleged abuse towards her children, including her 12-year-old boy whom she referred to as “Satanic.
In a journal entry dated July 10, 2023 (her son’s 12th birthday), she wrote: “He secretly moves about, seeking chances when others aren’t looking, and then he quickly departs. If he wishes to imitate the Savior, he must be completely obedient without any deviations or concealment.
She wrote about punishing her children by beating them and withholding food and water.
Investigators’ conversation with Kevin, recorded after Ruby’s arrest, was made public by the prosecution. In this recording, Kevin discussed the supposed limitations he experienced within their household.
In a recording obtained by TopMob, Kevin expressed his feelings about the new restrictions he found himself under: “I could leave whenever I wanted, but I wasn’t allowed to return until Ruby granted me permission,” he said. “I had to ask Ruby for permission to enter the kitchen and eat, and the upstairs where Jodi was stayed off-limits to me. Essentially, my own house became off-bounds. Ruby controlled all aspects of our interactions, deciding when we could talk, and that was tough.
