Joker 2 Changes Harley Quinn’s Origin Story (& Makes It Worse)

Joker 2 Changes Harley Quinn's Origin Story (& Makes It Worse)

As a longtime fan who’s seen my fair share of Harley Quinn adaptations, I must say that Joker: Folie à Deux’s fresh take on her origin story has me intrigued. It’s not the working-class accent from Batman: The Animated Series, but Lady Gaga’s Upper West Side Harley is a captivating departure.

In the latest Todd Phillips movie titled “Joker: Folie ? Deux”, Harley Quinn’s origin story undergoes significant alterations. Unlike in previous portrayals, Lady Gaga portrays Harleen “Lee” Quinzel who hails from the Upper West Side and comes from a relatively affluent family. This is quite different from the gritty working-class background that made her character so popular in “Batman: The Animated Series”. Moreover, instead of having a Ph.D., Harleen’s education in psychology only extends to a Master’s degree. Most notably, this version of Harley Quinn aids Arthur Fleck in his transformation into the Joker, which is usually the other way around in other Bat-media. In traditional tales, it’s The Joker who corrupts Harley and turns her into a villain.

Some viewers could find themselves surprised by the dramatic change in Harley Quinn’s portrayal, veering away from the traditional roots of the character. However, it’s evident that the creative team behind this project wanted to explore a fresh take on Harley Quinn that aligns with the Joker Universe. In an interview with Empire Magazine, director Todd Phillips and Lady Gaga discussed their vision for a unique version of Harley Quinn. While she dons the signature black, white, and red, her performance exhibits a captivating madness that sets this portrayal apart from previous ones on screen. Yet, it’s important to note that at its heart, this interpretation may differ from what fans initially anticipate upon entering the theater. Phillips elaborates on Gaga’s performance and how she made it uniquely her own.

Phillips contended that while some aspects of her character might seem familiar, Gaga’s portrayal is uniquely her own, along with Scott Silver’s interpretation. He likened this transformation to how Charles Manson had followers who admired him. Similarly, some elements of Harley in the film originated from the comics, but they were reshaped to suit our creative vision.

Lady Gaga Deserves Some Props For Her Performance

In a somewhat different wording: The Joker sequel, titled Folie ? Deux, might not appeal to everyone. However, Lady Gaga’s performance certainly warrants recognition. DC Studios hoped that the combined star power of Joaquin Phoenix and the multiple award-winning artist would elevate this sequel. The first Joker movie was widely acclaimed in 2019, and after watching this film, many will undoubtedly defend these outstanding performances. (To be fair, they are truly remarkable, and her singing adds a nice touch to the overall performance!) Prior to the release of the movie, casting director Francine Maisler expressed excitement about this collaboration at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. There is evident chemistry between them, and Lady Gaga truly shines in her role.

In a playful manner, Maisler hinted, “She’s exceptional in this role, trust me. She’ll leave you astounded. I didn’t originate the idea; it was Todd Phillips before me. However, let me tell you, she’s more surprising and impressive than expected. When I saw it, I was genuinely surprised. We knew what she could deliver in ‘A Star is Born,’ but I thought, ‘This seems to be within her capabilities.’ Yet, this performance… She’s truly exceptional. Joaquin Phoenix leaves an impression, but she manages to keep up with him and remain authentic – not overshadowed by the role or her performance.
