Kevin Smith's Highest Rated Movie on Rotten Tomatoes Is Streaming Free

As a lifelong fan of Kevin Smith and his distinctive brand of humor, I can’t help but feel a surge of nostalgia as I hear that “Clerks” is now streaming for free on Pluto. This film was my gateway drug into the captivating world of Smith’s View Askewniverse, and it still holds a special place in my heart.

With a fresh new month upon us, streaming platforms have rolled out a host of fresh movies for your viewing pleasure. If you’re a fan of Kevin Smith, you’ll be thrilled to know that his highest-rated film, “Clerks“, is now available for free on Pluto. Although it was technically added in September, October’s cooler weather makes it the perfect time to curl up and enjoy a good movie. And trust me, “Clerks” fits that description perfectly!

1994 saw the premiere of Clerks, which marked Kevin Smith’s first directorial venture. Not only did Smith write the script, but he also produced the film alongside Scott Mosier. The cast included Smith, Brian O’Halloran, Jeff Anderson, Marilyn Ghigliotti, Lisa Spoonauer, Jason Mewes, and Mosier. This black-and-white production chronicled a day in the lives of Dante Hicks (O’Halloran) and Randal Graves (Anderson), two convenience store and video clerks, as they navigated a mix of personal and professional challenges throughout the day. The narrative became even more engaging (and amusing) due to the fact that it unfolded on Dante’s day off, yet he found himself compelled to cover for another employee – a situation Dante made clear he was not supposed to be in, reminding everyone that “I’m not even supposed to be here today.

The film is the first in Smith’s View Askewniverse films and also serves to introduce a number of characters that go on to be recurring characters in future films, most notably Jay and Silent Bob, portrayed by Mewes and Smith respectively. The film, which was shot for just over $25,000, ended up being a surprise hit, bringing in over $4 million at the box office. The film was also well received by both fans and critics which resulted in its current 90 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film went on to get two sequels — 2006’s Clerks II and 2022’s Clerks III which both currently have 63 percent ratings on Rotten Tomatoes.

Apart from initiating the universe of the View Askewniverse, the movie Clerks has led to numerous associated projects over the years. These include a TV show, an animated series, comics, and a 2021 comedy-drama titled Shooting Clerks, which was directed by Christopher Downie and featured several cast members from Clerks, including Kevin Smith. The film has also garnered cultural significance, appearing on various “best of” lists like Empire’s “500 Greatest Movies of All-Time,” where it ranked at 361. Furthermore, in 2019, the Library of Congress added Clerks to its National Film Registry for being considered culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.

Speaking of Smith, his latest production, titled “The 4:30 Movie,” hit the big screens last month. This film, which takes place in 1986, is a semi-biographical piece that draws heavily from Smith’s teenage years and personal experiences.

Clerks is now streaming on Pluto.
