The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon Season 2 Episode 2 Recap: "Moulin Rouge"

As a seasoned fan of the Walking Dead universe, I must say that this episode was as captivating as ever. The characters’ journeys, particularly Daryl and Isabelle, resonated deeply with me. I find myself drawn to their struggles for survival and hope amidst the chaos.

In a heartfelt plea, Laurent (Louis Puech Scigliuzzi) prays, “Dear God, these are my desires:” He yearns for the people he cherishes to remain secure and content. He longs for a time when this place becomes his sanctuary. Everyone around him expresses their affection towards him. He is aware that he’s not meant to be an ordinary child. Despite wanting it… wishes can’t change our fate. Instead, he hopes to become the person they need him to be. Yet, there’s also a wish in his heart – to be the individual he desires to be.

In season 2 episode 2 of The Walking Dead focused on Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus), titled “Moulin Rouge,” we find Daryl and Mathis (Théo Costa-Marini) back at the Nest following their successful rescue mission for Fallou (Eriq Ebouaney) and Emile (Tristan Zanchi), who had been held captive by Madame Genet (Anne Charrier) and her warriors. As Sylvie (La?ka Blanc-Francard) expresses affection towards Emile, Laurent greets Daryl with a carved wooden dog figure.

In another location, Carol (Melissa McBride) and Ash (Manish Dayal) make an emergency landing in Greenland due to a fuel leak. Two residents, Eun (Minami Bages) and Hanna (Maria Erwolter), greet the Americans in the territory they call Kalaallit Nunaat: The Land of the People. The locals guide Carol and Ash through lush fields known as Tupilag, a name derived from an ancient Inuit myth about a carnivorous creature. They inform the travelers that they haven’t seen anyone in years. Eun and Hanna were conducting climate research for their PhD when the world underwent a catastrophe 13 years ago, making them the sole occupants of a Greenland research station ever since. Over a meal of roasted reindeer, Hanna suggests that the apocalypse is Earth attempting to heal itself. “Tupilag represents Mother Nature defending herself,” she explains to Carol. “Don’t mess with someone’s mother.

At the Nest, a serene Emile is jolted, yet remains silent about his encounter with the Guerrier. Sylvie notices he’s unharmed and prompts him to share. He confesses: “I struck a bargain with God to return to you.” On the other hand, Daryl momentarily pauses his instruction of Laurent in self-defense and tracking to introduce him to an American pastime – baseball. Sharing his reservations about Losang’s teachings with Laurent’s aunt, ex-nun Isabelle (Clémentine Poirot), he expresses skepticism. “It’s important for a child to question things,” she responds. “It’s healthy.” When Daryl inquires if she harbors doubts about Losang’s prophecy, she replies: “Indeed, it’s healthy.

In the evening, Isabelle realizes that Laurent has gone missing, and it seems likely that the Guerrier took him from his room. Losang concludes that someone revealed the location of the Nest, with Isabelle thinking the Pouvoir are returning Laurent to Paris. Therefore, Losang orders the Union to follow Daryl’s lead: “Truth is hope.” (Truth is hope.) As Isabelle departs with Fallou and Daryl to search for Laurent, Emile’s suspicious expression betrays him as the suspect who struck a deal with Genet.

In Greenland, I find myself accompanying Ash as we work to mend his plane. He shares with me the tale of flying Carol to Paris in search of her daughter Sophia, and how, since the loss of his son Avi, he hadn’t considered expanding his family. If everyone held such feelings, he muses, “The human race would fade away as if we were never here.

In this scenario, Hanna was intended to assassinate Carol while Eun served as Ash’s sperm donor. However, Carol sensed Hanna’s internal struggle about her task, so she offered Hanna an escape route from Greenland on Ash’s plane. Unfortunately, Eun arrived back without Ash, urging Hanna to kill Carol. Instead, Hanna fired a bolt into Eun’s forehead, ending her life. Later, Hanna guided Carol through a dark field filled with Tupilags, expressing that accompanying Carol and Ash to Paris was the first time in years she had considered the future. In an unexpected turn of events, Ash shot Hanna dead using a flare gun, justifying it by stating, “She was going to kill you.” This was his first experience taking a life. “I’ve killed many people,” Carol replied somberly. “The memory never fades away.” With that, they departed for Paris.

In the forests of France, Daryl’s team follows Laurent’s footsteps, but Sylvie uncovers a shocking truth – Laurent never ventured beyond the Nest. Meanwhile, Daryl, Isabelle, and Fallou fall into a deadly trap set by their Union escorts. Simultaneously, Sylvie locates Laurent confined with Losang. It’s later revealed that Isabelle and Fallou were unwanted intruders – their mission was to lure the Americans away from the Nest and eliminate Daryl, ensuring that Laurent remained within the Nest. Emile clarifies that such an outcome would render all their efforts futile, “Nothing would matter. Everything we’ve done.” Fallou attempts to reason with him, and the trio learns that a significant event is scheduled for tomorrow, intended to demonstrate that Laurent possesses a unique status, symbolizing a future where they can no longer be harmed by the starved ones. During this ceremony, Laurent will resist the attacks of a starved one, thereby eradicating any lingering doubts about his extraordinary nature. Isabelle questions Emile regarding the significance of this event, to which he replies, “Does this seem like salvation to you?” Before Daryl could be killed, Isabelle assassinates Emile instead.

Carol and Ash land at an old racetrack just outside Paris. He wants to go with her to find her daughter, but she wants him to stay at the plane. It’s safer, and he’s going to need to fly them out of there when the time comes. He reluctantly agrees to guard the plane and track down fuel, and Carol tells him not to keep waiting if she’s not back in two weeks. With a crossbow slung over her shoulder and her recollection of high school French, Carol leaves to find Daryl. “Bonne chance,” Ash calls out. “It means ‘good luck.'” To that, Carol replies: “Au revoir!”

In Paris, Carol encounters the city symbol of “Power,” a slogan she recognizes from the French flag, as she searches for Daryl. This emblem is displayed outside a repair shop in the red, white, and blue colors of the French flag. The posters read: “For Us,” “Unite,” “Genet Feeds the People,” “Genet Protects the Living,” “Against Illness,” “Against Invasion,” and “Let’s Take Power.” A food truck bearing the same symbol stops, leading Carol to follow a trail of breadcrumbs to the Grande galerie de l’évolution.

On the shores of Normandy, Daryl, Isabelle, and Fallou are biding their time until the tide recedes, gazing at a structure they once considered safe, now transformed into a fortress—a prison for Laurent. For years, Isabelle held faith in this place, in Losang, believing it to be their salvation. “I thought it was the one thing that would safeguard us,” she confides in Daryl. She had vowed to her sister, Lily, that she would shield Laurent, and now he faces the same grim destiny as his mother—the bite of a zombie. Isabelle then proposes that if the offer still stands, she and Laurent will depart with Daryl.

In French, there’s a term Isabelle shares with Daryl called “dépaysement“. This word is tricky to translate into English, but it essentially means “a refreshing change of environment that makes you see things from a new perspective.” Daryl tries saying it out loud: “Day-pay-ee-zon”. He seems to like the sound of it. They exchange a knowing look, and Daryl leans in for a kiss with Isabelle.

Within the Nest, Losang shares with Jacinta a quote from French philosopher René Descartes, stating, “Uncertainty was the birthplace of knowledge.” If there’s any uncertainty about doubt being the central theme in this episode, Losang reassures Jacinta that he is certain about their plan. “We’ll move forward with the test,” Losang says, “and it will succeed.” However, he acknowledges that they must still confront Daryl upon his return. It was Jacinta who altered the course of action — by issuing a hit on Daryl. “I spoke the truth,” she justifies, “Daryl posed a threat to our mission. As long as he remained, he would be an obstacle.

At the Pouvoir headquarters in Maison Mère, Sabine updates Genet about their preparations within the Workshop. As Genet’s trusted assistant, she was once in a position to be tormenting the man she now torments: Codron (Romain Levi), a former warrior who had previously spared Daryl and Laurent before directing them to the Nest. Bruised and battered, Codron refuses to reveal the location of the Nest despite being tortured with a cork. “The nun, the boy, the American… you’ll tell me where they are,” Genet smirks. On a nearby table lies Azlan’s pocket watch, which contains an image of what Genet is searching for: the Nest located at Mont-Saint-Michel, Normandy.
