Did The Penguin Just Tease Batman Villain Poison Ivy?

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of DC Universe under my belt, I must say that “The Penguin” Episode 3 has certainly piqued my interest. The introduction of Bliss seems to be setting the stage for none other than Poison Ivy herself, and it’s got me all aflutter.

In Episode 3 of “The Penguin,” titled “Bliss,” it was unveiled that the drug Sofia Falcone (played by Cristin Milioti) and her brother Alberto (Michael Zegen) had been secretly concocting was Bliss, a new narcotic. This innovative substance would have enabled the Falcone siblings to overthrow their father’s control of the drug “Drops,” allowing them to reap the profits exclusively. However, Penguin (portrayed by Colin Farrell) thwarted their plan when he rashly killed Alberto in Episode 1. Yet, following his manipulation of Sofia into believing the murderer was a double-crosser from her own ranks (as seen in Episode 2), Oz ultimately managed to persuade Sofia to include him in the new undertaking.

WARNING: SPOILERS FOLLOW!!!

In Episode 3 of “The Penguin“, Sofia leads Oz to a hidden factory where she’s producing a new substance called Bliss. Upon entering, Oz spots deliveries labeled with the Arkham State Hospital logo, indicating that it was actually Sofia who devised the plan for this drug while she was there. Delving deeper into the warehouse, Sofia discloses that Bliss is concocted from an exceptionally scarce and delicate mushroom, known as “Bleeding-Tooth”. These mushrooms have blood-red spores on their surface, and it’s these spores that create a blissful high (hence the name), which Sofia intends to market as the ultimate party drug.

In the latter part of the show, Penguin and his associates launch their initial move by peddling Bliss to an entire rave club. This drug lives up to its promise, causing euphoria among the attendees, depleting their stock but also persuading a Triad boss to collaborate with them in the drug trade. The drug scene in Gotham City has now undergone a transformation.

Is The Penguin Introducing Poison Ivy to The Batman Universe?

Did The Penguin Just Tease Batman Villain Poison Ivy?

It’s important for Batman enthusiasts to ponder some pressing questions regarding Bliss. The most significant question is who had the knowledge of the mood-elevating properties of those mushrooms and turned them into a medication that could tranquilize patients, instead?

In the mythos of DC Comics, the alternate identity of Poison Ivy is Dr. Pamela Isley, a doctorate-holding botanist based in Gotham City. Following a series of painful personal events (varying between stories), Isley acquires the ability to manipulate flora – though this powerful form may not be the focus in The Batman Universe. Instead, a character akin to Ivy who champions eco-friendly alternatives to pharmaceuticals and potentially faces consequences for her actions seems more plausible.

The previews for The Penguin hint at scenes showing Sofia Falcone’s past at Arkham Asylum – could Dr. Pam Isley make a guest appearance? To better understand how Sofia learned about the mind-altering mushrooms and created the Bliss drug, it’s essential to know the background story. This would also provide an opportunity to introduce a version of Poison Ivy that fits Matt Reeves’ interpretation of Batman. Since Gotham City is now underwater due to The Riddler, environmental problems are likely to be a major concern – and a great motive for an eco-terrorist to act.

Bliss could just be one hand of Poison Ivy’s offerings; the other hand could hold pestilence and/or death, in the form of other rare plants.

The Penguin s airing on Sunday nights on HBO and streaming on Max.
