As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I must confess, the release of the remake for Until Dawn has left me rather puzzled. Having played and enjoyed the original back in 2015, I was eagerly anticipating this update, only to find it struggling in its debut on Steam.
Last week saw the launch of the remake for “Until Dawn,” a highly-praised 2015 horror adventure game, now optimized and upgraded for PS5 and PC. It’s worth noting that this is the very first time “Until Dawn” has been playable on PC, but it appears to have garnered limited interest since its debut.
According to SteamDB, during its initial weekend, Until Dawn only had a maximum of 2,607 simultaneous players on Steam. This is one of the poorer launches for a PlayStation game on this platform, falling behind titles like Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart (8,757 peak concurrent players) and Returnal (6,691 peak concurrent players).
To put it another way, among PlayStation games available on Steam, only two – Concord (with 697 concurrent players) and Sackboy: A Big Adventure (with 610 concurrent players) – have had fewer simultaneous players than the remake of Until Dawn.
At present, Until Dawn boasts a mixed review score on Steam, with around 33% of its 560 user reviews being unfavorable. The remake has faced criticism across several areas, including its price point, technical glitches, mandatory PSN requirement, and more.
In our assessment of the updated version, we gave it an 8 out of 10, commenting, “While there are legitimate concerns about its cost and doubts about whether it was necessary at all, the remake of Until Dawn is essentially a robust and improved reincarnation of a contemporary horror masterpiece.” You can read the complete critique by following this link.
