Blake’s 7 star on her early exit: ‘I felt a bit short-changed’

As a cinephile who has been immersed in the world of television for decades, I must say that revisiting Blake’s 7, with its new Blu-ray set, brings back a flood of memories and feelings. The series, created by Terry Nation, was a groundbreaking piece of science fiction that captured our hearts and minds in the late ’70s and early ’80s.

The classic BBC sci-fi show, Blake’s 7, is getting a major upgrade! A brand-new Blu-ray collection is on its way, boasting remastered episodes and state-of-the-art special effects for an even more immersive viewing experience.

For four thrilling seasons spanning from 1978 to 1981, I found myself immersed in the universe of a series, meticulously crafted by Terry Nation, who brought the Daleks to life in Doctor Who. This captivating saga chronicled the adventures of a motley crew of rebels, engaged in an epic struggle against a tyrannical galactic Federation.

War resulted in casualties, as several main characters left the series during its duration, and now, lead actress Sally Knyvette has shared her thoughts on her departure following a two-season stint playing the role of space smuggler and proficient pilot Jenna Stannis.

At a BFI gathering celebrating Blake’s 7 – The Collection: Series 1, Knyvette shared how the character was initially presented to her as a “space pirate across galaxies,” and she admitted to feeling somewhat disappointed with her on-screen representation.

She mentioned that over time, people generally understood that her job shifted from being a space pirate to resembling more of a glamorous hostess,” she stated.

As a movie enthusiast, I found myself being transformed with an abundance of hair reminiscent of Raquel Welch and increasingly snug costumes. There were numerous scenes where these outfits were emphasized in specific poses, which seemed to undermine the spirited, interstellar space pirate character I was portraying. I felt constantly confined by the need to maintain a certain image on-screen.

Later on, Knyvette confessed to Nation, the show’s creator, that he found it easier to write for male characters. This was reflected in Jenna’s limited screen time and her absence from crucial action scenes, which ultimately led Jenna to try to leave the series due to a lack of significant involvement.

“I tried to leave after series 1 and I wasn’t allowed to because I was under contract.

In the first season, I found myself quite disheartened. Considering that they probably anticipated my departure, I believe my role decreased significantly in the following season.

After spending two years on Blake’s 7, Knyvette subsequently pursued a combined English and drama degree at the University of London. “I was determined to attend university, and I’m incredibly happy I made that choice,” she said. “However, I’m equally thrilled that Blake’s 7 has re-entered my life.

“It’s ironic that I left that one thing behind, yet I’m still around after so many years – it’s quite odd, but it seems destined to be, and it’s entirely due to my amazing fans and followers who have kept it going all this time.

Now, I’m likely more proud of it than I was initially, as I fully grasp why it became so popular.

In the break between the second and third seasons of Blake’s 7, both main character Blake (portrayed by Gareth Thomas) and Jenna vanished from the screen. However, in the final episode of the series, it was revealed that Blake returned, stating that Jenna had perished when she intentionally destroyed her ship, taking approximately half a fleet of gunships with her in the explosion.

Knyvette has doubts about the permanence of the character’s end. “I’m still alive,” she asserted. “Since no one has discovered my remains, technically speaking, I’m not legally declared dead!

Series 1″ includes all 13 episodes from the initial season, each one enhanced through remastering, and offering new, optional advanced visual effects for every episode.

Additional unique aspects are also included, such as an archival documentary titled “Behind the Scenes of Blake’s 7,” which delves into the creation of the first season, previously unseen convention videos, a heartfelt tribute to the character Travis actor Stephen Greif, and much more.
