Who killed Joel Deering in Coronation Street? All the suspects

As a seasoned Corrie watcher, I can’t help but notice the web of intrigue that’s been woven around Joel’s mysterious disappearance. With Ronnie driving to Joel’s flat on a separate occasion and Mason hiding a crowbar, it’s a veritable cornucopia of suspects!

Next week in the world of soaps, a fresh murder mystery unfolds as the malevolent figure, Joel Deering from Coronation Street, played by Calum Lill, is discovered deceased.

As the interrogation begins, there are several potential suspects, some of whom may be secretly pleased he’s gone, and a few unanticipated ones that have appeared on our radar unexpectedly.

Joel recently appeared, not long after causing distress to Roy Cropper (David Neilson), with a visible injury – a gash on one side of his face, seated in his vehicle.

Although he initially left a suicide note in his car, it was subsequently discovered that he had purchased another vehicle, which raises questions about whether he actually took his own life.

However, when Craig Tinker (Colson Smith) uncovers that Joel’s body was discovered near a riverbank, it seems that DS Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers) was correct all along. The tyranny of Joel did not end as she anticipated; instead, it came to an end in an unexpected manner.

This is murder – but whodunnit?

Join us as we delve into all the potential suspects below.

Who killed Joel Deering in Coronation Street?

Lisa Swain

Although she’s known for her diligence as a detective, Lisa raised some questions among us due to her apparent arm injury and noticeable distress when discussing Joel’s supposed suicide.

Could it be possible that Lisa responded aggressively to Joel’s manipulative actions towards Betsy (Sydney Martin), leading to a physical confrontation between them? This altercation might have caused the facial injury on him, and over time, could have contributed to his eventual death?

As a devoted cinephile, I can easily envision myself imagining Lisa lashing out at Joel following a few harsh words about Betsy. In the heat of the moment, she might exit the scene, unaware that Joel, though still showing signs of life, had sustained a fatal wound.

There’s been discussion about Joel being attacked with a crowbar before his body was found in the water. It’s possible that Lisa had a similar tool with her during an argument and, later on, Joel might have accidentally slipped or fallen into the river while trying to get help.

Her budding romance with Carla Connor (Alison King) seems to make it highly improbable that Lisa is the killer, as this development might account for her difficulty in maintaining her cool.

Upon witnessing Joel’s menacing texts threatening Betsy’s life, I found myself taken aback, as this revelation would have significantly heightened my resolve to bring him to justice if I had been aware of it earlier, around the time of his demise.

Kit Green

Previously established is that DC Kit, known as Jacob Roberts, displays a questionable moral compass. He also showed interest in assuming the case from Joel when Lisa was dismissed due to her association with Betsy.

Is this because Kit is behind Joel’s demise, and he wants to ensure he can cover his own tracks?

We simply don’t know Kit well enough to rule him out yet, but what we do know is that he’ll go to extremes, such as threatening Craig’s job in order to chase Beth Sutherland (Lisa George) out of town.

It appears that Kit may be obsessed with eliminating predators. If the placement of DNA evidence in Nathan Curtis’s vehicle (played by Chris Harper) is any indication, this could very well be a possibility. Could it be that Kit would act upon this obsession and kill Joel under the cloak of night, leaving his body submerged in water?

Dee-Dee Bailey

It’s possible that Dee-Dee believed deeply and strongly that Joel was still alive, and firmly rejected the idea that he had committed suicide. Yet, what if the turmoil surrounding her ex-fiancé’s actions led Dee-Dee to take action against Joel’s malicious schemes?

It’s been observed that Dee-Dee installed a tracker on Joel’s phone. Although this device was intended for Lauren (Cait Fitton) and Dee-Dee’s protection, it raises a question: could Dee-Dee have used the tracker to find Joel in time to deliver the fatal blow against the killer? We sincerely hope not, as it would be detrimental for her own wellbeing.

Instead of Joel, Dee-Dee seems to possess a kind, golden heart along with a strong sense of morality. This makes us consider her an unlikely choice. However, when it comes to Corrie, unexpected events are not uncommon, so the possibility remains open as ever!

Lauren Bolton

On the night of Joel’s disappearance, it appears that Lauren, as a person affected by the incident, was initially called upon to verify her whereabouts at that time.

As someone who’s passionate about cinema, I can’t help but ponder over the events unfolding in this mystery. Sure, Lauren was spotted napping at the Platt residence that night, which might seem like an alibi. However, it makes me wonder: do we truly have all the pieces of the puzzle?

Joel engaged in deeply reprehensible actions towards Lauren, including forcing her into sexual acts, physically assaulting her, abandoning her in critical condition, and attempting to drug her to end a pregnancy he fathered.

One day, it was discovered that young Frankie had fallen seriously ill, and this situation revealed that Joel was somehow involved. He accused Lauren of being responsible, continually provoking her, until eventually, Lauren lost control and struck Joel.

If Joel harasses Lauren again about their shared son’s troubles and mistreats her, could she lose control and, in a twist of fate that mirrors justice, strike Joel and abandon him, leaving him to perish solitarily, given that she was close to the water at the moment.

Next week, it seems that characters Lauren and Max Turner (played by Paddy Bever) are displaying some unusual behavior. Intriguingly, ITV hints at an enigmatic dialogue point in their official spoilers: “Nick approaches Lauren at the bar and queries about her experience of sleeping on the couch at No. 8 from a few weeks ago.

Is it true that Nick Tilsley (played by Ben Price) is currently residing at his family home, only to discover in the middle of the night that Lauren (unaccountably) wasn’t there on the couch – even though David Platt (Jack P Shepherd) had seen her sleeping there earlier? And could it be that Max is assisting in keeping Lauren safe?

Ellie Benton

After much convincing, Ellie (Lola Blue) finally confided in the police about Joel’s mistreatment, following her encounter with Lauren and sick Frankie.

Could it be that Ellie assumed control again since Joel failed to appear for his plea hearing and went into hiding, believing he was trying to evade the due process of law?

As a movie connoisseur, I find myself pondering over the potential consequences of wrapping up Corrie’s ongoing narrative. On one hand, it provides closure for the characters and allows them to progress in their respective journeys. However, this resolution could diminish the emotional intensity of the climactic plot twist that was intended to conclude this particular storyline, making it less impactful overall.

Actress Blue delivered striking portrayals as Ellie, yet isn’t it plausible to think that the show wouldn’t capitalize on the chance to boost a character’s fame by making them the suspected murderer?

There’s a chance the wrongdoer might not face an irreversible fate – even characters like Gary Windass from Coronation Street (played by Mikey North), who have taken lives through murder, have managed to rebuild their lives afterwards.

With that in mind, we’re not sure Ellie fits the bill – but let’s take nothing for granted yet.

Ed Bailey

In the forthcoming sequences, Kit questions Ed too, and Ed explains that he was with Dee-Dee and Michael (played by Ryan Russell) at the time when Joel disappeared, offering an alibi for himself.

Previously, Protective Ed was involved in a heated disagreement with Joel concerning the way he treated Dee-Dee, which potentially gives him a reason for any future actions against Joel.

On the other hand, it seems that Ed’s alibi isn’t being questioned, but brother Ronnie (Vinta Morgan) – another person implicated in the previous argument – appears to face scrutiny over a potentially interesting falsehood.

Ronnie Bailey

It’s implied that Dee-Dee informed Ronnie about the police’s suspicion that Joel was assaulted using a crowbar. Does this hint that we might notice some signs of guilt on Ronnie’s part?

More importantly, Ronnie was at home by himself when Joel disappeared, and furthermore, he mentions that his navigation system holds Joel’s address due to using it in the past while assisting him with a move many years back.

Yet, Michael informs Debbie Webster, Ronnie’s partner (played by Sue Devaney), that the car they had used was in fact his own. This raises the question: why did Ronnie drive to Joel’s apartment on a different visit?

This situation offers plenty of chances for Ronnie to reveal himself as the culprit, yet it feels overly apparent. Could it be that he’s a murderer, or perhaps there’s something more that Ronnie is concealing?

Mason Radcliffe

Lisa finds herself taken aback upon discovering that Mason Radcliffe (Luca Toolan) owned a crowbar – the very same tool now being considered as the murder weapon.

According to Betsy’s warning, it’s Kit who sees Mason attempting to discard the crowbar – a tool they had previously talked about using in a robbery that Mason was pressured into by his brother, Logan.

It seems like Mason might be trying to evade suspicion in the Joel case by claiming innocence, possibly implying that he was the one who used the crowbar for some underhanded business. However, it’s also possible that his involvement in Joel’s death is merely coincidental or unrelated.

The sole apparent connection between Mason and Joel is through Betsy. Given this, our current guess would be that Mason might be a false lead or misdirection at this stage. But there’s always the chance that he isn’t.

Betsy Swain

It’s worth noting that Betsy faced a grave threat of harm from Joel, and afterward, she grappled with guilt over her role in his actions when he manipulated her into making the drug purchase he later used against Lauren.

Under a mask of strength, Betsy hides her fragile nature – a young woman who, like Joel, has been manipulated. Given that Betsy allegedly struck the fatal blow against Joel that fateful night, one might wonder if she’s had the resilience to maintain her composure throughout these years?

Could it be possible that, given Star Martin’s highly acclaimed debut and the rapid rise of Betsy as one of Corrie’s finest recent additions, we might suspect her of being a murderer? Yet, considering Betsy’s impulsive nature, such a dramatic blunder seems fitting for her character.

Fake death

Could it be that Joel’s father, Gus (Chris Garner), resurfaced this week and was spotted on surveillance cameras with Joel, leading us to wonder if they might have devised a plan to stage Joel’s demise? This way, Joel could escape the country and embark on a fresh beginning.

Perhaps, if it’s Gus who positively identifies the deceased and thereby verifies Joel’s death, could we consider the possibility that Joel’s death might be the most significant misdirection in this entire storyline?
