As a seasoned film enthusiast with a penchant for time-traveling tales and British television, I eagerly anticipate the return of Peter Capaldi’s enigmatic character Gideon in The Devil’s Hour season 2. Having had the privilege to witness Capaldi’s transformative portrayal of the Doctor in Doctor Who, I am thrilled to see him delve deeper into the complexities of another time-bending role.
Following his long stint as The Doctor in Doctor Who, Peter Capaldi is once again delving into a time-traveling adventure with The Devil’s Hour season 2. He requested the creator, Tom Moran, to craft his character as being “more interstellar” or “more space-oriented”.
As a devoted cinephile, I’m thrilled to delve into the next chapter of the Prime Video series. This time around, our protagonists, Gideon (Capaldi), and Lucy (Jessica Raine) find themselves in an awkward partnership, banding together to thwart a haunting repetition of a calamity.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I’ve found Doctor Who’s Twelfth Doctor, Capaldi’s Gideon, to be an enigmatic character who, in season 1, casually mentions having a “complicated relationship with time.” However, as the season unfolded, this seemingly casual remark proved to be a significant understatement.
In Season 1, Gideon spent most of his screen time confined within a cell. This prompted actor Capaldi to urge writer Moran to develop Gideon as a more relatable and human character.
This time, however, Gideon is no longer confined, but released into the world, leading Capaldi to reintroduce a sense of enigma.
Previously, I was alone in a cell, prompting my suggestion for adding more human elements to his actions since they come at a price. Originally, his actions seemed somewhat concealed; however, I aimed to expose his vulnerabilities by making them more apparent.
However, since we observe him actively engaged in various activities and witnessing his personal consequences, this time around, I thought it would be fitting to ensure that he maintains a touch of the cosmic.
“Poor Tom! I’m always asking him for more. I don’t want grounded, I want cosmic this time!”
Meanwhile, Jessica Raine, who stars alongside Capaldi, faces a significant task by portraying two distinct versions of her character, Lucy Chambers. She referred to this experience as “simply incredible.
In Season 1, Lucy’s frazzled state is mostly absent, as she now exhibits a sharp, determined focus on completing tasks effectively.
She noted that the intricate and constantly changing interaction among the principal characters was particularly engaging: “The rapport between Lucy and Gideon in season 2 was strikingly distinct and captivating to portray – somewhat antagonistic, cranky, yet mysteriously connected.
“It was such a challenge and such a joy to really get my teeth into it.”
