Marvel Comic Reveals the Aftermath of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi Ending

As a seasoned Star Wars enthusiast who has witnessed the rise and fall of empires, I must say that the events unfolding in this narrative are truly captivating. The resilience of the Rebellion, the cunning of the Empire, and the complex dynamics between characters like Leia, Luke, and Grand Moff Adelhard, all serve to create a rich tapestry of intrigue and suspense that keeps me on the edge of my seat.

The epic battle in Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi concluded with the Rebel forces triumphing over the Galactic Empire during the Battle of Endor, which led to the demise of the Emperor, the annihilation of Death Star II, and Luke Skywalker successfully converting the Sith Lord Darth Vader back into the Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker. Following this victory, our heroes – Luke, Leia, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Lando Calrissian, R2-D2, C-3PO, and the Ewoks – celebrated their success and enjoyed a peaceful existence… until the emergence of the First Order and the fall of the New Republic.

The Marvel Star Wars comic series titled “Star Wars: The Battle of Jakku” delves into the period following the events of “Return of the Jedi.” Named after the decisive battle of the Galactic Civil War between the New Republic and the Empire, this trilogy consists of three limited series – “Insurgency Rising,” “Republic Under Siege,” and “Last Stand.” Spanning 12 issues in total, these series help bridge the gap between “Return of the Jedi” and “The Force Awakens.

In contrast to previous Disney stories set during that era, this week’s “Star Wars: The Battle of Jakku – Insurgency Rising” #1, penned by writer Alex Segura (known for “Star Wars: Poe Dameron – Free Fall”) and illustrated by Leonard Kirk (“Star Wars: Darth Vader – Black, White & Red”), unfolds directly following the events of “Return of the Jedi” and the Battle of Endor.

On the moon Endor, shrouded in forest, Leia bids farewell to Han, a rogue-turned-Rebel commander, as he departs with the Rebels, aiming to eradicate remaining Imperial forces. Later, Leia pays respects at Anakin Skywalker’s funeral pyre and discovers the burned Darth Vader helmet, an artifact that will eventually belong to her son: Ben Skywalker, also known as Kylo Ren.

Greetings, Father. It’s me. I’ve come to bid farewell, Leia explains. I wasn’t certain about what I expected from this encounter. This moment ought to be filled with joy. I should be rejoicing. After enduring so much hardship, we’ve finally received some positive news. Yet, I’m obstinate. I can’t resist my feelings. I needed to speak with you directly.

However, she now finds herself at a loss for words. Unlike Luke, she struggles to find forgiveness with the ease he demonstrates. “What I feel is not forgiveness, but rather anger – anger towards your actions, the people you harmed, and those you abandoned,” she confesses. “Yet, for now, I shall put these feelings aside.” As Leia gazes upon the bonfire where Rebels and Ewoks revel in the comforting light, her anger dissipates, leaving room for a smile. “My family needs me,” she whispers.

In an attempt to maintain the Empire’s dominance across the galaxy, including the Anoat Sector, the Sith cleric Yupe Tashu calls upon the Anzati woman Reyna Oskure for a gathering of the Acolytes of the Beyond on Devaron. Tashu explains that it is their mission to restore balance in the galaxy following the Emperor’s downfall by suppressing the fledgling New Republic. Therefore, he arranges a meeting with Grand Moff Adelhard.

“Just like republics, both the Jedi and Sith come and go,” says Oskure. “History’s flames are relentless and unchanging. Be cautious about what you and your followers wish for, Yupe Tashu, because it may indeed come true.

Pilot Rynn Zenat, flying a B-wing starfighter, forcefully lands on Endor and shares a grim message with Luke and Leia: “The Rebellion’s triumph over the Empire seems like only the beginning.” She cautions them about Imperial Grand Moff Adelhard, describing him as relentless and determined to sustain the war. If given the chance, he will stop at nothing to annihilate us and rebuild the Empire.
