Red Dead Redemption is finally coming to Windows PC — here's the release date

What you need to know

  • Red Dead Redemption first launched all the way back in 2010 on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
  • The game is playable on Xbox Series X|S consoles through backward compatibility, and it was ported to PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch in 2023.
  • Red Dead Redemption is finally coming to Windows PC on Oct. 29, 2024.
  • This new version includes the Undead Nightmare expansion, and also includes support for PC features like 144hz, adjustable draw distance, and more.

As someone who has been around long enough to remember when the original Red Dead Redemption graced our consoles back in 2010, it’s hard not to feel a sense of nostalgia mixed with excitement as I write this. Finally, after years of waiting and porting across multiple platforms, Rockstar Games has announced that Red Dead Redemption will be making its way to Windows PC on October 29.

It’s finally happening.

On October 29th, the highly anticipated Windows PC version of Red Dead Redemption will be released, as announced by developer Rockstar Games on Tuesday. This port has been developed in partnership with support studio Double Eleven and will include the Undead Nightmare expansion, making it perfect for those who are looking forward to Halloween.

This version of Red Dead Redemption on PC comes with special features tailored to PC gaming, such as 144Hz refresh rates, ultrawide screen compatibility, customizable shadows and draw distance, NVIDIA DLSS 3.7, frame generation, and additional options. You can find it on Steam, the Epic Games Store, or directly from the Rockstar Store. Here’s a look at the game’s port reveal trailer: [insert link]

In a narrative that portrays the waning days of the Wild West, the game Red Dead Redemption features John Marston, a reformed outlaw, who is called upon to capture the remaining members of the Van der Linde gang. The events in Red Dead Redemption take place subsequent to its 2018 sequel, which was later released for PC in 2020, following the events detailed in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Red Dead Redemption has traveled quite a journey before reaching us, debuting as far back as 2010 on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Recently, it’s been playable on Xbox One and the newer Xbox Series X|S consoles thanks to backward compatibility. Last year, Rockstar Games also released ports for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch.

As a researcher, I am eagerly awaiting the forthcoming release of Grand Theft Auto 6 by Rockstar Games, scheduled for Fall 2025. This highly anticipated title is set to debut on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, with no official announcement regarding a PC version as of yet. Given Rockstar’s past trends, it seems reasonable to expect that a PC version will be unveiled sometime in 2026 or 2027.
