MAX’s Velma Has Been Canceled: Report

MAX's Velma Has Been Canceled: Report

As a die-hard fan of animated series, I’ve seen my fair share of ups and downs, twists and turns. But nothing quite prepared me for the rollercoaster ride that has been Max’s Velma! The Halloween Special was a chilling treat, wrapping up the story in a way that left me craving more… or so I thought.

When thinking of controversial animated series, you’d be hard-pressed to find a bigger example than MAX’s Velma. Creating a drastically different iteration of Velma and the other members of Mystery Incorporated that popular the Scooby-Doo franchise, the series recently returned with a Halloween Special for the spooky season. In a surprising new update from a background artist on Velma, it appears as though Warner Bros and MAX will not venture further into the world of Velma Dinkley for a third season. Based on how the Halloween special came to an end, this might come as a disappointment to those following the series.

In my fangirl enthusiasm, I’d say my confusion about Velma’s storyline largely stems from the diverse interpretations of our cherished cartoon characters. Over the first two seasons and the latest special, Scooby-Doo surprisingly didn’t make an appearance, despite hints from a mishap at a government lab. Instead, Scrappy-Doo took on the antagonist role in season two, which left me hoping for Scooby’s arrival that seems perpetually delayed. Before the Halloween Special, Velma was killed by Scrappy and was on a quest to resurrect herself and return to her body.

Velma Cancelled?

In his latest Instagram post, background artist Davey Cummings hinted that the recently aired “Velma Halloween Special” might be the conclusion of the series. He expressed how much he enjoyed working with the team and regretted there won’t be a season 3. However, he expressed hope for future collaborations. As of now, MAX has not made an official announcement about the matter.

Velma’s Not So Bright Future

In the Velma Halloween Special, several plot threads were left unresolved. The main characters fought off an undead horde and solved “The Black Knight” mystery, but Velma managed to return to her body while Fred appears to be under a dark spell from an enchanted book. Unfortunately, Shaggy, or Norville as he’s known here, didn’t get the chance to pursue a relationship with Velma in this installment, but he did maintain his current romance within the series. Sadly, there’s no confirmation of a third season, so it seems that the Scooby-Doo universe we’ve grown fond of won’t be returning for more adventures.

Scooby-Doo Will Return

Fortunately, enthusiasts of Mystery Incorporated are looking forward to a fresh animated show featuring Scooby-Doo and Shaggy. Titled Go-Go Mystery Machine, this upcoming Cartoon Network production will combine the eerie vibes of the franchise with an anime aesthetic. The storyline unfolds as Shaggy and Scooby travel to Japan, where they tackle mysteries involving supernatural forces. Although a release date has not been announced yet, this new series is set to be the fifteenth installment in the long-running franchise that has chronicled the adventures of the Scooby Gang throughout the years.

In this new animated series, although Fred, Daphne, Velma, and Scrappy-Doo haven’t been mentioned yet, Scooby-Doo and his partner will find support from Japan. Accompanied by Scooby’s Japanese uncle, Daisuke-Doo, they’ll also have help from a magic practitioner named Etsuko and a tech-savvy individual called Toshiro. The fact that another Scooby-Doo show with an anime style is being made highlights the increasing popularity of anime not just in Japan, but also in North America and globally.
