Silent Hill 2 Director Says New Remake Is “More Immersive” Than the Original

Silent Hill 2 Director Says New Remake Is "More Immersive" Than the Original

As a longtime fan of the original Silent Hill series and someone who vividly remembers the chilling atmosphere and haunting storylines that these games provided, I must say, I am absolutely thrilled about Masashi Tsuboyama’s praise for Bloober Team’s remake of Silent Hill 2.

In a fresh round of comments, Masashi Tsuboyama, the mastermind behind the initial “Silent Hill 2”, has lauded Bloober Team’s newly launched remake as significantly more immersive. Previously, many fans of “Silent Hill 2” had expressed cautious enthusiasm about the upcoming remake. However, since its release, the game has garnered mostly positive reviews from both critics and players across various aspects. Now, the director himself is expressing his opinions on the new version, and he generally speaks highly of it.

Talking about X, Tsuboyama expressed his overall enjoyment of the reappearance of Silent Hill 2 in this remake, as it offers a new group of gamers an opportunity to engage with it. Despite the fact that the remake may not have met everyone’s expectations, including his own and those of fans, Tsuboyama clarified that this doesn’t diminish the original game, which continues to thrive independently.

Despite his reservations about the original game’s camera angles due to technological constraints on the PlayStation 2, Tsuboyama expressed excitement about the Silent Horror 2 remake because it offers a third-person perspective. He believes that this viewpoint will provide a more immersive and realistic gaming experience by allowing players to engage with the game’s story in a deeper way compared to the original game’s camera angles, which were limited by technology at the time.

Tsuboyama pointed out that games and technology are continuously advancing, leading to considerable changes in limitations and creative possibilities. This is a challenge often faced by media arts overall, and maintaining and cherishing the atmosphere of an era can be difficult. However, he believes that the benefit of remakes lies in allowing a new generation to experience them. As a creator, he feels incredibly pleased about it, as it’s been 23 years since its creation! Even if you haven’t played the original version, you can simply enjoy the remake for what it is. Whether it’s well-received or not doesn’t alter the original piece.

“The change in playable camera has a significant impact on many aspects. Combat, level design, art creation, etc.,” he continued. “While the impact on the story may be relatively small, it brings a big change to the play-feel of the game. To be honest, I’m not satisfied with the playable camera from 23 years ago. Depth and angle were limited by the processing load. It was a continuous process of hard work that was not rewarded. But that was the limit. The over-the-shoulder view definitely adds to the sense of realism. In other words, it makes me want to try playing the even more immersive remake of Silent Hill 2!”

Silent Hill 2 Director Has One Big Issue With the Remake

If there is one gripe that Tsuboyama has with the Silent Hill 2 remake, though, it’s more aimed at Konami. Tsuboyama said that he’s been disappointed to see the game promoted so heavily for its improved visuals, 4K resolution, and pre-order bonuses. He dubbed these as “mediocre” selling points that fail to sell new players on what the Silent Hill franchise actually is.

The criticism seems reasonable considering Silent Hill hasn’t had a new installment for almost a decade. Therefore, remaking SH2 needs to appeal not only to original fans but also those unfamiliar with it. Whether it’s succeeding in this endeavor remains unclear, but we might find out if Konami decides to disclose sales data later on.

If you’re keen on owning a copy of Silent Hill 2 , the remake is now out for both PlayStation 5 and PC systems. There’s a possibility that it might also appear on Xbox in the future, once its one-year exclusive run on PS5 concludes.
