As I sit here, pondering over the enthralling conclusion of Slow Horses season 4, I find myself in awe of the rich tapestry of secrets and twists that Mick Herron has woven into this gripping narrative. The revelation that River’s estranged father was none other than Frank Harkness, the enigmatic mercenary at the heart of this season’s intrigue, is a testament to the depth of character development and plot complexity that this series offers.
Here it is – the final episode of Season Slow Horses has concluded, wrapping up with a thrilling denouement that unveiled some deeply intimate truths about River’s life.
This latest season was based on Mick Herron’s fourth novel in the Slough House series, Spook Street, and saw River investigating after his grandfather David shot an assailant who looked just like him.
Simultaneously, a suicide attacker initiated a sequence of incidents that ultimately linked to Frank Harkness, a soldier-for-hire who secretly fathered multiple children with various women. He then took these children away from their mothers and molded them into devoted followers of his.
However, who exactly was Frank, what became of him, and did the team at Slough House manage to survive?

Slow Horses season 4 ending explained: Who was Frank?
In the preceding episode, River found herself confronting Frank Harkness at a local tavern, following an ambush. It might not come as a surprise to many viewers that she addressed him as her father, saying affectionately, “Hi, Dad.
Indeed, it’s accurate that Frank served as River’s biological father. This fact was acknowledged by River himself, as he recognized it from the birthday cards he received in his childhood.
David had always hidden the fact from River that his father had left him and later passed away in a car accident, as his mother had shared with him.
During our initial meeting, I must admit I wasn’t overly affectionate, and I shared with you that I hadn’t known your mother in a romantic sense. However, I felt an unexpected connection and extended an employment opportunity to you, River.
River showed no interest, confessing that he was grateful he hadn’t grown up under Frank’s care. Moreover, it became clear that Yves’s explosion was not a call to arms against the western world, but rather a personal confrontation aimed directly at Frank, shedding light on their complex relationship.
What happened to Frank?
At the bar with Frank, River made a phone call to Louisa. This prompted Louisa to find Roddy, who traced the call. Eventually, Louisa enlisted Emma and some law enforcement officers. The situation escalated into a confrontation when Frank, armed with a gun, threatened River in their presence.
A new team of MI5 agents, marked by Claude as a target for elimination against River, made the situation more complex. Frank managed to flee by setting off a grenade, causing confusion.
After a pursuit, River discovered Frank concealed among the crowd at St Pancras Station. Impressed by River’s skills, Frank surrendered his weapon to Emma and Louisa. River subsequently disclosed to Louisa the true identity of Frank.
Following his arrest, Diana questioned him. It transpired to Diana that Frank had set up an escape plan, and he informed her that she would need to release him.
Later on, Jackson presented Diana with a group of correspondence addressed to the leaders of intelligence agencies. The letters warned that she must release Frank within 12 hours or they would be made public online, revealing that MI5 had frequently employed Frank for their underhanded tasks over the years.
The implication was that Frank would soon be let go – meaning he’s still out there somewhere…
Did the Slough House team make it out alive?
Regrettably, I’m sorry to say that it appears the Slough House gang find themselves in a tricky situation. This is due to Moira giving Sam a heads-up about David’s whereabouts – all unbeknownst to her that Patrice, one of Frank’s crew, happened to have Sam’s phone. As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but see the irony in how a simple call can lead to such complications.
In response to his assault, they attempted to protect themselves. Unfortunately, Roddy was wounded in the arm, while Marcus bravely stepped forward to confront him, ultimately meeting a tragic end during the encounter.
As Patrice prepared to attack Shirley, Jackson unexpectedly intervened, striking him hard on the back of the head first, followed by additional blows from Shirley to ensure Patrice was properly restrained.
In this scenario, they attached Patrice to a radiator, and as Jackson stepped away to phone the park, Shirley tried to aim a gun at him, intending to shoot him in the head. JK managed to persuade her that such an action wouldn’t improve their situation, and Marcus wouldn’t have wanted her to take his life.
In response, she surrendered the firearm to JK. This action led him, unexpectedly, to discharge the weapon thrice, fatally wounding the attacker. Following this act, he took a deep breath before slipping on his headphones and departed.
Where did we leave Jackson, River and the rest of the team?
Jackson set up a system to have Marcus’s future wages paid directly to his family, ensuring their financial support for many years.
In the meantime, Moira confronted Claude and disclosed that she recognized him as Galahad, and had discovered his history of soliciting. Remarkably, she was able to regain her previous position from him, as well as negotiate a four-day workweek and a salary increase.
Towards the close of the season, River facilitated David’s relocation to a senior care facility managed by the Park. Initially resentful of this change, David criticized River, but River emphasized that it was necessary for David’s protection. He promised to visit him every other day instead.
Following his departure from home, River headed off to a local tavern to find Jackson. There, he got Jackson to put his itinerary on record. The two remained quiet, sharing a drink together at the same table.
