“It’s just me”

As a fan, I am utterly captivated by the enchanting performances of Maggie Smith. Her ability to portray profound emotions without succumbing to sentimentality is nothing short of remarkable. In the realm of Downton Abbey and other productions, Violet’s character has been a standout for me, demonstrating that age truly does not wither nor hinder her talent.

JULIAN FELLOWES From the very start, Violet’s character strikes you as fantastic, doesn’t it? I write these roles for actors like you because some, as they age, tend to become overly emotional. You possess a unique talent in portraying deep emotions without resorting to sentimentality.

MAGGIE SMITH I think that is just me, not the way that I am acting — that is my personality.

As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but notice that your on-screen presence doesn’t appear to be driven by the desire for popularity or approval, which is quite liberating. Do you find yourself consciously detached from this need?

I believe the reason is that I seldom take on roles where my character is likable. Instead, I’m often given characters who are somewhat unpleasant elderly women.

In a simpler and more natural way of expression: I don’t believe there’s anything unlikable about you in any of your roles. Even though Lady Trentham might come off as an old bully, she is still adored by many in the movie “Gosford Park”.

I’m deeply grateful for Harry Potter

MS I know what you mean, but I think whatever you do you’re put in a pigeonhole.

In simpler terms, Bette Davis once remarked that actors who aren’t confined to a specific role find it harder to secure jobs, and there seems to be some truth in that statement. I believe there might be fewer actresses with the level of demand for work that you possess.

MS Joan Plowright once confided in me, “These days, there are very few roles available and Judi Dench manages to claim them before others even have a chance.

It seems to me that most people would agree that Judi, Maggie, and Joan are currently holding onto some roles. For older actresses, this can be quite a challenging situation, but the fact that consistent work continues to come their way makes them among the fortunate ones.

MS That is very true. I know I am lucky. I’m also deeply grateful for Harry Potter.

JF Do you enjoy the Harry Potter phenomenon?

MS I do so little in it that I got to the point of thinking they could make do with just the hat.
