“The Taggie-Rupert age gap was made smaller for TV”

As a fan who had the privilege of being part of Rutshire’s vibrant community just like Taggie, I can wholeheartedly relate to her initial shyness and subsequent growth. The cast was indeed a star-studded lineup, and I remember feeling as starstruck as she did! But luckily for me, they were far more welcoming than the fictional characters sometimes portray themselves.

Tagge, the child of Declan and Maud, starts off as quite timid. However, she eventually seems to settle comfortably into life in Rutshire. Does this reflect your own experience while working on this series?

At first, much like Taggie, I found myself feeling quite intimidated as the cast was filled with individuals I greatly respected. However, unlike Taggie’s experience, in reality, the cast welcomed and mentored me, alleviating my initial apprehension.

In the narrative I’m referring to, there’s an instance where my character, Taggie, experiences an unwelcome and outdated gesture – someone giving her a squeeze on her backside. This was somewhat normal in 1986, but it’s clearly not acceptable behavior today.

In the ’80s, it likely wouldn’t have been considered appropriate either. At first, she didn’t believe she had the power to express herself. I find this theme significant, as many people still struggle with finding their voice today.

In a captivating turn of events, Taggie manages to charm even the most commitment-averse character, Rupert Campbell-Black, in this fictional universe. However, it’s worth noting that there’s a noticeable age difference between them. Did this factor pose any challenges for you?

The television adaptation undoubtedly reduced the distance between the characters compared to the book. However, this reduction doesn’t diminish the complex nature of their relationship or its role in making the story intriguing – a factor that both challenges and encourages the audience to sympathize with them.

Would you resurrect any of the era’s distinctive fashions?

Trends tend to cycle back around over time. For this event, I was rocking cowboy boots and 501 jeans, and interestingly enough, I own those items in my everyday wardrobe as well.
