As a seasoned detective with years of experience under my belt, I must say that I’m intrigued by this newcomer, Marina. Her smartness and determination are qualities I can certainly appreciate, but her struggle to be recognized within her team is something I can relate to all too well. It seems like she’s got a hill to climb, much like Rhiannon did in her days.
The six-episode show on Sky Atlantic titled “Sweetpea” presents Ella Purnell in the role of Rhiannon, an individual who’s spent her life feeling unseen and uncertain about her identity, yearning for a fresh start.
However, following her father’s demise and the return of the school bully, she experiences a drastic and aggressive change.
Overwhelmed by her anger beyond measure, Rhiannon sets out on a rampage, focusing her violence on anyone she believes deserves a gruesome and violent demise.
However, it doesn’t take much time before those close to her begin to notice the change in Rhiannon’s character, a transformation that poses a risk not only for her but also for them.
Regarding the project, Purnell commented: “It was an extremely tough yet immensely satisfying experience. It took half a year, involved numerous night scenes, and I was present for every moment of every scene. I put in a tremendous amount of effort.
You’re often finding yourself stuck in a thought pattern that reflects deep insecurity, fear, loneliness, anger, and a strong sense of being wronged or victimized. Maintaining this mindset can be challenging due to its intensity, so I knew from the outset that I would need to prioritize my mental well-being.
During the downtime between scenes, I had the chance to bond with the crew and grew particularly close to them. We’d chat with director Ella Jones, socialize, and let loose, forgetting about Rhiannon entirely. In this manner, I ended up forming friendships with everyone I eventually portrayed as victims!

Ella Purnell plays Rhiannon

Nicôle Lecky plays Julia

The character profile states that she has convinced herself she never bullied Rhiannon in school, but insists it was trivial and unimportant. However, Rhiannon holds Julia accountable for her actions and will not allow Julia to forget.

Calam Lynch plays AJ
Who is AJ? He’s recently become the junior reporter at The Gazette, a role that Rhiannon had been keenly interested in, due to the editor having fond feelings towards his mother.
The original character description says, “She believes he is simply another privileged individual born into fame (nepo-baby), who receives opportunities she feels are rightfully hers.” However, AJ and Rhiannon share a unique connection; it’s as if he’s the only one who appreciates her more complex traits. But the question arises, what will happen when AJ uncovers that Rhiannon’s mysterious side extends beyond typical office jokes?
Apart from Bridgerton, you may recognize Calam Lynch from other productions such as Mrs. Wilson and Archie where he’s also made an appearance.
Leah Harvey plays Marina
Who is Marina? A junior detective who’s described as “smart” and “driven”.
This year, she’s aiming to take on more responsibilities, but she’s finding it tough to gain recognition within a team that’s often resistant and disregarding. Unfortunately, her unconventional approach as a detective makes it simple for her peers to underestimate her, similar to the character Rhiannon who is also overlooked.
Besides Foundation, is there anything else Leah Harvey has starred in? She’s particularly recognized for her role in Foundation, but she has also graced the screen in A Gentleman in Moscow.
Jeremy Swift plays Norman
Who is Norman, the Gazette’s editor who often underestimates Rhiannon and has a habit of referring to her as “Sweetpea”?
However, as she grows more confident and insists on having a voice in the workplace, he is compelled to pay attention – especially since her work is indeed of high quality.

Dustin Demri-Burns plays Jeff
Who is Jeff? He’s our top journalist at the Gazette. Known for being overconfident, self-absorbed, and inflexible, this facade hides a sense of insecurity he wouldn’t openly acknowledge.
When Rhiannon advances in her work, Jeff becomes more and more resentful, feeling marginalized and small-minded about it. He decides to apply his investigative skills: something about Rhiannon’s rapid advancement seems suspicious to him, and he becomes fixated on uncovering… the source of her newfound self-assurance.
