As a lifelong musical theater enthusiast who grew up listening to the original Wicked soundtrack on repeat, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming film adaptation! The prospect of seeing Elphaba and Glinda’s origin story unfold on the big screen, with the incredible talent of Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in the lead roles, is simply too tantalizing to resist.
One of the most iconic villain origin stories will soon be landing in cinemas.
That’s right, folks: the Wicked movie is almost upon us.
The award-winning Broadway musical “Tony” will be transformed into not just one, but two eagerly awaited movies by Universal Studios. One of these films is scheduled to hit theaters towards the end of this year.
In the upcoming films, singing sensation Ariana Grande and award-winning actress Cynthia Erivo will take on the roles of Glinda and Elphaba, the witches, respectively.
In the first installment of “Wicked,” renowned director Jon M Chu (known for his work on “In The Heights”) has assembled a highly talented ensemble. This includes Academy Award winner Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum.
This year, we got a comprehensive preview for the initial movie, offering viewers a detailed glimpse into the first installment of the musical adaption.
Previously, Universal unveiled a brief teaser during the Super Bowl. However, a fresh clip now offers fans a more comprehensive sneak peek into the characters portrayed by Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, Ariana Grande as Glinda, and Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero in the upcoming film.
The previews suggest that Erivo and Grande’s performance of Defying Gravity is a highlight, yet the movie will introduce fresh tunes penned by the original Wicked composer, Stephen Schwartz.
Wicked: Part One plot
In the initial movie adaptation, the storyline will replicate the happenings from the first act of the stage production, culminating with the performance of its most renowned number, “Defying Gravity.
The official description labels it as the “unexplored tale” of Elphaba – “a youthful lady, often misjudged due to her peculiar green complexion, who is yet to unveil her hidden potential,” and Glinda, “A renowned young woman, adorned with privilege and ambition, who is yet to unearth her genuine emotions.
They become acquainted as students at the magical university of Shiz in the land of Oz, forming an unexpected yet deep friendship. After an encounter with the Enigmatic Wizard of Oz, their friendship faces a critical juncture, leading their lives down distinctly separate paths.
In a nutshell, Glinda’s relentless pursuit of popularity leads her down the path of power, whereas Elphaba stays steadfast in her identity and convictions, which may bring about surprising and startling outcomes in her life ahead.
In the end, their breathtaking journeys through Oz will lead them to realize their fates, becoming Glinda the Good Witch and the Wicked Witch of the West respectively.
