Sister Wives’ Christine, Janelle Weigh in on Kody & Robyn's Tension

As someone who has also experienced the pain of estrangement from a parent, I can empathize with both Kody and Robyn in this situation. It’s heartbreaking to see the distance between parents and their children, especially when it stems from misunderstandings and unresolved issues.

In two years, Kody Brown has seen three of his plural marriages fall apart.

In the most recent season of “Sister Wives,” it seems my relationship with Robyn Brown is facing challenges, as we’ve had heated disagreements and she’s expressed losing respect for me. Yet, my former wives, Janelle Brown and Christine Brown, may not interpret this as a sign that our shared life is in turmoil.

As Christine, 51, put it simply in an exclusive interview with TopMob News, “I think they’re fine.”

55-year-old Janelle concurred, expressing, “It seems to me that’s likely a typical pattern in many relationships between couples.

From my perspective as a lifestyle expert, the significant transformation in their family dynamics over the past few years – with Kody transitioning from four spouses to one – has profoundly impacted his relationship with Robyn, at 55. Following Christine’s departure in 2021, Janelle decided to follow suit in 2022, and Meri Brown ended her strained marriage with Kody shortly thereafter.

Christine, who has six children with Kody, stated, “I can understand how challenging that must be for him. In just two years, he’s had three divorces. Naturally, their relationship will likely require some adjustments since it affects one’s personal identity. However, I suspect they’re managing well and will eventually thrive together.

Janelle echoed the sentiments, emphasizing, “I’m sure they’re fine.”

Regarding Christine, she has advanced in her romantic life, having just celebrated a one-year wedding anniversary with David Woolley. When asked about her first year of marriage, here’s what she might say…

Christine exclaimed, ‘So much fun, so much excitement!’ She went on to say, ‘I’ve never truly grasped what they mean by ‘companion.’

Being married to David, she finds herself more independent than she’s ever been,” she enthused. “I’ve taken on new challenges and achieved more than I thought possible. My business skills have improved, as has my ability as a mother. I feel I excel in every role better than before. With him by my side constantly, I truly have a dedicated partner.

In my own words, as a devoted admirer, I might say: Back in 1990, Kody Brown and I, Meri Brown, exchanged vows, yet just shortly after, he hinted at our separation. He would often whisper sweet nothings like, “Meri, when we move to Flagstaff, this will be a fresh start for us.” This was in 2018, referring to our relocation. It seemed as if he was always planting seeds of hope, saying things that would lead me to believe in the possibility of a new beginning between us. However, looking back, I realize that these promises have been repeated over many years, leaving me with a sense of disappointment and longing for the truth.

She expressed her primary concern as being his poor communication, including his feelings, desires, and dislikes, as well as the narrative he has maintained over the years.

Kody admitted that his actions might have sent “confusing signals,” but when he began working on projects, he found himself questioning, “What’s the point of doing this?” He clarified, expressing that he wouldn’t pursue a relationship with her at present.

Either way, Meri’s friends were thrilled when she finally pulled the plug in early 2023.

She admitted, “They essentially said, ‘We’re here with you, ready to help. It’s high time,'” but now she realizes that for years he had been subtly trying to persuade her to leave by claiming he didn’t love her. In her newfound understanding, if he could make her depart and she did, he wouldn’t be the villain because he wouldn’t have left himself.

After many years since the family bought a 14-acre plot of land intended for construction in Flagstaff, Ariz., Kody revealed in the season opener that he was prepared to let the dream fade away. Since they couldn’t construct without fully paying the $820,000 price (a debt reportedly settled in 2023), he suggested this plan to his remaining wife Robyn Brown: “I’d almost prefer to abandon it or sell it and then restart somewhere else.

As for Robyn, “I can’t talk about that,” she responded. “That is so not where I’m at.”

Initially, Janelle Brown mentioned to TopMob News that the relationship was gradually fading away, but it was primarily Kody’s shortcomings in his parental role towards some of their children that eventually prompted her decision to part ways.

In simpler terms, the mom told Logan Brown, Madison Brown Brush, Hunter Brown, Garrison Brown, Gabriel Brown, and Savanah Brown that the turning point for her was when his relationship with her children deteriorated and he didn’t seem to be making a serious effort to mend it. She added that this realization made her understand that this was the primary reason she had stayed in the situation before.

The reason Kody didn’t put more effort into repairing the strained relationships with some of his grown children, was what he shared as an explanation.

In the September 15th episode, he expressed his feelings of not belonging within the family anymore. Despite being legally married to Robyn, sharing five children together – Dayton Brown, Aurora Brown, Breanna Brown, Solomon Brown, and Ariella Brown – he also maintained some relationships with other kids, but these were infrequent. This left him questioning his role, stating, “It doesn’t feel like a family; I don’t know where I belong or what to do with all of this.

Although they’ve never been more committed as a couple after 14 years together, Robyn admitted in the season 19 opener that their marriage is currently in its most challenging state. “It’s been difficult for us,” she explained. “Kody doesn’t know who to blame, himself or one of the other wives. He feels a lot of rejection and I think he’s worried that I might reject him too.

Consequently, she disclosed, “I’m constantly vigilant. I’ve got to be sure he isn’t undermining our relationship.” In her own words, the most challenging aspect was: “There’s no support available for dealing with the fact that I’m still married to a man who’s going through multiple divorces.

Meanwhile, Kody was grappling with a wave of self-doubt, expressing, “I find it hard to tell my reflection, ‘Hi there, pal. I adore you.’

Include Madison, the eldest child of Janelle, in the group of kids who are currently not interacting with Kody. As stated during the premiere, “I know that Maddie hasn’t spoken to her father,” Janelle clarified. “He hasn’t called her, she hasn’t contacted him, and they don’t have any relationship at present. She seems to have cut them both off from her life.

Janelle pointed out that Kody is only partially involved in the relationship with Maddie’s children Axel, Evangalynn, and Josephine. She stated that he would only be allowed closer interactions if he could fully commit to it.

Consequently, during the Sept. 22 episode, Kody essentially stopped communicating with Maddie and her husband, Caleb Brush, when the family began to significantly fall apart.

Without Kody being around or reaching out, Maddie has taken on a very protective role, as expressed by Janelle. She feels that until Kody can be reliable and present without causing a scene, it might be best for everyone if he remains less involved in their lives.

Additionally, Robyn mentioned that she’s been urging Kody to take steps to repair their relationship. However, she also added, “It seems only fair for the children to do the same.

Currently, it appears as if Kody is hesitant about mending the rift, expressing frustration that each conversation with his daughter felt like fishing for gossip, leading him to become weary of it.

During their 32nd anniversary celebration, “He hinted that he never truly loved me and felt like our marriage was a necessity,” Meri confided in her friend Brandi during the Sept. 15 premiere. I responded by saying, “Kody, I know you cared for me.

And if he didn’t, the mom to Leon Brown said in a confessional, why did he ever choose to propose?

She pondered, “Why would a bachelor select a maiden to marry when he doesn’t yet feel genuine affection for her? Isn’t it harsh, to single me out among many and declare, ‘I have chosen you, and I shall attempt to cultivate love for you over the next three decades?’

In his private thoughts, Kody stated, “Well, Meri is making some allegations. That’s okay, she can speak as she wishes. I won’t be responding to them.

Despite being unsure whether to develop Coyote Pass or just sell it, Janelle realized that the first move was settling the Arizona property debt. With Kody not open to discussing the matter, she expressed her concerns to her former sister wife Christine Brown in the Sept. 22 episode, stating, “I believe I might need a lawyer’s help.” She added, “That seems like the only way I’ll be able to make any kind of decision from him.

In simpler terms, Janelle admitted that since she isn’t legally married to Kody, she doesn’t have any rights to claim his property. She explained it by saying, “It’s not as simple as calling a lawyer for a divorce. Instead, the situation is complex because there’s no legal marriage involved.

Kody’s reason for avoiding discussions about the Arizona property with Janelle is due to his loss of trust in her.

During the September 22nd episode, I emphatically declared, “When the time is right, we’ll settle that property,” and I prefer to keep my strategies under wraps. Frankly, I’ve had enough of sharing details that only seem to fuel the gossip circuit within our fractured family.

A bit of a pot calling the kettle black, Janelle said in her own interview.

She mentioned, “He seems to share everything, much like water flowing through a colander. When he opened up about his past relationships and multiple spouses, I felt it wasn’t appropriate for him to disclose such details to me.

In the days when the family’s affection continued to grow instead of wane, they would combine their funds in a single shared fund.

In simpler terms, Janelle stated during the September 22 episode that we would pool our resources to aid one individual, followed by collective support for another. This was the norm until about the last decade, but now it seems more about personal wealth accumulation, with each person focusing on building their own estate.

When Robyn found herself needing a house in Arizona, everyone contributed towards purchasing her 5-bedroom property worth $1.65 million that was up for sale in August.

Initially, Robyn mentioned that acquiring the property would benefit the entire family. However, when Janelle proposed that they all share the mortgage, she faced opposition. Kody responded by saying, “No, no, we need to safeguard, understandably, Robyn’s estate,” according to Janelle’s recollection. Now that she’s leaving the family, as per Janelle, she wants her fair share of the Coyote Pass earnings and also wishes to recover some of the money she invested in Robyn’s house.

But that could be a tough sell.

Robyn remarked, “After all this time collaborating, it’s perplexing to me.” And when Janelle mentioned she was due money from them, Robyn continued, “I mean, I just can’t seem to wrap my head around it. It’s just so puzzling.

In response to the family’s struggle with paying off Coyote Pass, Janelle pointed out that Kody often mentioned having numerous other debts. However, she has observed him acquiring items such as trailers and home decorations. She noted the artwork on Robyn and Kody’s walls and said, “I see all these things.” She acknowledged that she too has spent money on items, but Kody explained that most of his cash was used for purchasing cars and insuring their children.

Although Janelle admitted she wasn’t clear about Kody and Robyn’s financial management, she often found herself taken aback by the beauty of Robyn’s backyard. It was always immaculately done, and there were plenty of items at her house that left Janelle in awe, remarking, ‘Wow, really? Huh.’

Essentially, she expressed that he didn’t place importance on her needs or desires, which became a significant problem over time. Eventually, she acknowledged this issue and even her adult children grew increasingly frustrated, expressing something along the lines of “What on earth, Mom?

In Robyn’s perspective, she became quite meticulous with managing her finances following the breakdown of her initial marriage.

She confided during the September 22 episode that she hadn’t always been good with finances. In her youth, she experienced tough financial lessons, and it was during her divorce that she truly mastered budgeting. Regarding her fellow sister wives, she suggested they may have chosen to allocate their money differently than she did.

Currently, as seen in the September 22 episode, Janelle admitted that while she and Meri, Robyn, and Kody (parents of Aspyn Brown, Mykelti Brown Padron, Paedon Brown, Gwendlyn Brown, Ysabel Brown, and Truely Brown) gather with their families, there is little to no contact between them. She doesn’t anticipate this situation changing significantly in the near future.

Reflecting on the period when they lived together in four houses on a single cul-de-sac in Las Vegas, Kody described it as “the best time of my life.” He explained, “Everything ran smoothly, and it was wonderful having Maddie and Caleb around. I really grew fond of Caleb; he felt like family to me.

However, discord arose in Arizona concerning coronavirus safety measures, and this disagreement eventually led to chaos. Meanwhile, when his marriages disintegrated, he lamented that the connection with his children also weakened, stating, “This only worsened all our relationships.

But Christine insisted their were issues well before she announced she was leaving in late 2021.

On the September 22nd episode, she stated, “The children who felt frustrated had been feeling that way long before I departed. My departure didn’t alter their relationship with Kody. In fact, Kody has the ability to mend his relationships with his own kids.

Though it’ll definitely take some work.

Kody expressed, “I’m still very upset about how I’ve been portrayed because it’s not true. The problem is, I can’t accept blame for things my wife or ex-wife are accusing me of. I’m hoping that one day the resentment will fade and we’ll be able to rediscover forgiveness and love towards each other again.

At the time they got married, which was when Kody was 21 and Meri was 19, both of them admitted that they were not particularly well-acquainted with each other, either spiritually or legally. They eventually decided to part ways in 2014, allowing Kody to legally adopt Robyn’s three oldest children from her previous marriage. (The original sentence is grammatically correct but may be improved by rephrasing for better readability.)

In our marriage, she seemed quite changed, and I suspect there were some past issues she carried, which I wasn’t aware of at first. At first, I thought I could tolerate it. However, as time went on, everything felt like a struggle because she was often upset with me. I can’t continue living in a state where she is consistently angry with me.

As a devoted admirer, I found myself trapped, much like Kody described. In his unique circumstance, he explained, “If one wishes to remain loyal and steadfast in our faith, divorce is not an option. It’s forbidden.” Thus, I was unable to escape from that bond. Yet, it wasn’t solely a desire to break free; rather, I yearned to understand if there was a chance for salvation and repair within the relationship.

Consequently, he admitted that Meri believed they could resolve their issues. However, whenever they interacted, Kody pointed out, “She wasn’t pleasant, she wasn’t amusing, she wasn’t kind, she wasn’t intriguing. I’m trying to be interested in her, but I’m growing tired.

He acknowledged that it was understandable for Meri to feel neglected, but he clarified, “I didn’t force them out. Instead, Christine, Janelle, and Meri decided on their own to ask me to depart from our shared home.

Even though Janelle and Christine hadn’t legally married Kody, Meri intended to seek a formal separation from him within their church, which is often referred to as a “release.

In the episode on September 22nd, she clarified that all four of us married Kody through our church. However, since we couldn’t legally marry him, we referred to it as a covenant. Now, since we aren’t planning any further marriages and I don’t want to be bound to him for eternity if he doesn’t wish it, I think it’s best that we fully separate from this arrangement.

Kody showed reluctance, mentioning that she wasn’t comfortable with accepting the leadership of the church officials.

In simpler terms, Kody said that the harm inflicted was so severe that reconciliation is no longer an option for him. He further stated that he doesn’t wish to be answerable to this church or its complications, as he feels obligated only to God. Therefore, he plans to let Meri make her own decisions and live her life because if he harbors anger towards her, it would lead to conflict. He wants her to move on because it has taken her too long to accept that their relationship is over for quite some time.

2021’s holiday gift exchange conversation took an unpleasant turn for the 18 Brown children, as Christine explained. “Things just fell apart, things went wrong,” she recounted. “Kody, Robyn, and their kids formed one group who showed no interest in Janelle, me, and our kids. This text exchange led to a division that ensued afterward.

In simpler terms, Robyn explained that her older children found the interaction to be uncomfortable and felt it necessary to distance themselves from the relationship. However, she clarified that this wasn’t about cutting off contact completely or showing disinterest, but more so about expressing that things had become awkward for them.

Aurora asserted that she had been repeatedly informed, by various individuals and under various circumstances, that she wasn’t welcomed as a part of the family when her mom married Kody in 2010. She emphasized that she was never recognized as their sister, and they didn’t perceive or treat her in that manner.

Her sister, Breanna, expressed that she believes the parents could have made more effort to bring our family closer together, but unfortunately, this connection never materialized.

But Christine isn’t sure how they could have opened their arms any wider.

In simpler terms, “Robyn’s children and Robyn were always invited to any event,” she emphasized. “What I mean is, they are more than welcome to drop by our home whenever they feel like it.

Simultaneously, she mentioned, her daughter Ysabel Brown shared a strong bond with Robyn’s children, and in fact, Mykelti Brown Padron resided with them for a while. She explained, “There were challenging periods, and my children felt exasperated at times, but they viewed Robyn’s children as their siblings regardless.

Speaking enthusiastically about the freedom it offers, Janelle described her experience of plural marriage as follows: “In a well-functioning system, you become an integral part of this fantastic family network, connected to a community that truly accepts you. You have a loving husband and maintain a wonderful relationship with him, yet at the same time, I retain my independence. To me, having multiple spouses is not just acceptable, but a truly advantageous setup.

Sister Wives’ Christine, Janelle Weigh in on Kody & Robyn's Tension

According to Janelle, Kody found it more challenging to distribute his affection when the family moved from Las Vegas to Arizona in 2018.

In the recent episode on September 29th, I observed that Kody found it more manageable to keep his distance when he relocated to Flagstaff. Occasionally, I had to gently remind him of our standing arrangement – visiting my home. He would often cite exhaustion as an excuse, but I’d respond, “You can rest just as comfortably here as you do at Robyn’s.

According to Janelle, her kids were reprimanded when they opened Robyn’s refrigerator, indicating a sense of distance or separation they felt with Robyn. Meanwhile, for Christine’s children, the problem was that they noticed their father was in a relationship with Robyn, and he wasn’t present at their home.

And Robyn said her crew definitely felt the divide.

In the September 29th episode, she mentioned that Meri welcomed my family and me warmly, but the rest of the family found it difficult to accept us. She explained that our aim was simply to become a part of their family.

Sister Wives’ Christine, Janelle Weigh in on Kody & Robyn's Tension

During a September 29 episode, Kody described how the constant movement between four homes affected his eighteen children, particularly an instance where his youngest with Robyn, Ariella (born in January 2016), held onto him tightly when he tried to depart, indicating the emotional impact of their living situation.

In his own words, Kody expressed, “‘I told her, ‘Another woman requires my attention, another mother for my children. There are other kids who need to see me,'” illustrating the difficulty he faced. However, as she clung to him and pleaded, “Don’t abandon me, Daddy, don’t abandon me,” he lamented, “Boy, this is tough.

Unfortunately, that’s just a reality of plural marriage, insisted Janelle.

Right from the get-go, it’s been a heartbreaking reality for them – my kids knew their dad wouldn’t be around all the time. I’ve always felt that Kody and Robyn mishandled this situation with her children. It seemed to me that he couldn’t be away for more than three or four days because little Ari just falls apart. To me, it feels like poor parenting. Throughout the annals of our family history, the other kids managed, and they turned out to be well-adjusted adults.

Sister Wives’ Christine, Janelle Weigh in on Kody & Robyn's Tension

Among the rare youngsters of Brown descent, Mykelti was the one who managed to maintain relationships with both Robyn, Kody, and Kody’s other two wives, Christine and Janelle. During Kody’s divorces, it was Mykelti who often stepped in as a mediator or peacekeeper.

From the very beginning, Mykelti felt close to Robyn when she joined the Brown clan. In fact, Mykelti extended an invitation for Robyn to be present at the delivery room during the birth of her twins, Archer and Ace, in November 2022.

During the September 29th episode, Mykelti shared that when Robyn initially became part of our family, I was still trying to understand myself. Robyn made me feel unique and understood. She was a presence when I required someone. She was a comforting voice when I needed someone to listen to me, to care for me.

Christine was overjoyed beyond words, as she explained on the October 6 episode. “Ever since Robyn joined our family and it became apparent that she and Mykelti shared a wonderful bond, it exceeded all my expectations,” Christine expressed. “When I dreamt of having a multi-parent household, I yearned for my children to have strong relationships with other mothers, and this is precisely what I’m witnessing.

Sister Wives’ Christine, Janelle Weigh in on Kody & Robyn's Tension

As a lifestyle expert, I’d put it this way: “I, Kody, find myself feeling excluded by more than just my wives. It seems they are deliberately keeping me at arm’s length as a form of retribution for a crime I didn’t even commit. All I’m truly guilty of is not being head-over-heels in love with the mothers of these children.

What’s more, he continued, he think his former spouses are a bit to blame.

He stated that the strain in his relationship with his children is largely due to negative remarks about him. He explained that the emotional turmoil stemming from the family separation has led him to feel as though he’s being unfairly blamed for the problems, like a common thought being “Well, it must be Dad who messed up.

As a lifestyle expert, I’d put it this way: Although I acknowledge some responsibility in the situation, I bristle at being called names. In fact, I openly admit that I was finding it challenging to bond with Hunter, Maddie, and Gabriel. One of my children even replied to a text message saying something hurtful like, “You’re worthless. I wouldn’t talk to you again anyway.

In a separate incident, he told cameras, “I’ve had one of my kids just say, ‘You’re an a–hole. I’m never talking to you again. You manipulated me and you brainwashed me.'”

He’s unwilling to continue dealing with the venomous situations, as he stated, “I won’t stretch out my hand indefinitely.” He expressed his belief that the adults involved should take more responsibility for resolving the issues. He’s prepared to put forth an effort, but he expects others to reciprocate by also making an effort.

Sister Wives’ Christine, Janelle Weigh in on Kody & Robyn's Tension

For Robyn, watching Kody’s estrangement from his adult children hit far too close to home.

In her conversation on October 6th, she shared that her parents divorced when she was young. This meant that her father lived with another woman in a different city, while her mother lived alone. She recounted an encounter where she asked him about their separation, and all he offered were weak excuses for not being present during her childhood, which left her feeling disappointed.

Instead of letting Kody’s wounded feelings deter him, she made an effort to continue. During their heated discussion captured on camera towards the end of 2022, she expressed something along the lines of finding it difficult not to question her respect for him slightly, as she put it.

Even though Kody admitted there’s room for improvement in repairing his relationship with his children, he emphasized that he must heal his own heart first.

He confided that some of his children seem to be conspiring against him, and he explained, “I’m so enraged by what has transpired that if I interact with my kids, I fear they might provoke me with an allegation. At this moment, I’m too emotionally charged. I’m afraid I’ll only make things worse.

Sister Wives’ Christine, Janelle Weigh in on Kody & Robyn's Tension

Despite all of them attending a wedding as a family towards the end of 2022, there seemed to be little warmth or affection among them.

In the October 6th episode, Kody expressed frustration to Robyn, saying he had noticed Madison whisking her children away from him. He pointed out that his daughter hadn’t informed him about her pregnancy, which resulted in the birth of their third child, daughter Josephine, in February 2023. Essentially, he stated that she never told him she was carrying a baby.

Frankly, Maddie doesn’t tell her dad much of anything with the two rarely speaking.

To put it simply, I’ve got to make this clear: Maddie’s not buddies with that fellow. You see, she’s incredibly guardian over her kids. Kody hasn’t been around since Evie came into the world, and Evie is now nearly four. She didn’t want him showing up unannounced and acting all surprised, “Hey, I’m your grandpa!”, only for them to be taken aback, wondering, “Who on earth is this stranger?” That’s why Maddie kept her distance at the wedding.

Kody expressed that it’s not practical for grandparents to be constantly present in their grandchildren’s lives, using Maddie’s situation in North Carolina as an example. He further explained that if you relocate your children to a completely different coast, maintaining close ties can become challenging due to work and personal commitments in other locations, like Flagstaff.
