As a supporter who has experienced my own fair share of character transformations and stepping out of comfort zones, I wholeheartedly admire Tahj Miles for taking on the challenging role in “Mr Loverman”. The subject matter might make some people uncomfortable, but as he rightly said, it’s these uncomfortable moments that raise questions, spark answers, and ultimately lead to growth.

Previously starring on Death in Paradise, Tahj Miles found it both thrilling and nerve-wracking to take on a new role in Mr. Loverman after leaving the popular murder mystery show behind.

However, it turned out to be quite intimidating as I had spent four years immersed in the mind of Marlon [the police officer from DIP], so transitioning to an entirely new character with unique struggles and experiences was daunting.

The eight-part TV series, based on Bernardine Evaristo’s book with the same title, features Lennie James as Barrington Jedidiah Walker, a 74-year-old Londoner of Antiguan descent who is about to reveal his true feelings to his wife of half a century. This revelation is intended to allow him to spend the remainder of his life with Morris, his lifelong friend and soulmate.

Miles remarked that topics such as these often leave individuals feeling uneasy, as they can feel uncomfortably realistic or uncomfortably familiar. Some people tend to shy away from situations that make them uncomfortable.

In my view, it’s discomfort that triggers curiosity, and curiosity leads to discoveries. These discoveries are essential for progression and development in the dynamic world we inhabit.

In the story, Miles embodies Daniel, a 17-year-old grandson of Barry’s who is on the verge of starting college. Although his life seems promising, he grapples with personal worries of his own.

He explained that this particular aspect was intended to be quite straightforward and hassle-free in your daily routine. Essentially, all you need to do is attend school, enjoy time with your friends, and then wind down at home, maintaining a stress-free lifestyle.

However, as I reminisced about that period (when I was 17), I realized it was quite chaotic because there were numerous aspects of life that demanded attention.

I’m really thrilled about all the great things coming up, yet I must admit, it’s a bit frightening too.

Daniel, with a bright future ahead, brimming with untapped potential, possesses remarkable intelligence, maturity, eloquence, respectfulness. His family is fully aware of his capabilities and what he’s truly capable of. However, these expectations and added responsibilities can pave the way for an alternate path in life, if they become too overwhelming.

Miles’ cast is expanded to include Sharon D Clarke (known from Doctor Who and Holby City), portraying Carmel, Barry’s wife; Tamara Lawrance (Time) and Sharlene Whyte (Sherwood) as their daughters; and Ariyon Bakare (familiar from His Dark Materials and Good Omens), playing Morris, who turns out to be the true love of Barry’s life.

Beginning at 6:00 AM on Monday, 14th October, every episode of Mr Loverman can be streamed on BBC iPlayer. The initial two episodes will also broadcast on BBC One at 9:00 PM the same day, followed by new episodes airing each week thereafter.
