All Creatures Great and Small’s James confesses devastating tragedy to Helen

As a cinephile with a penchant for historical dramas, I must say that All Creatures Great and Small has been a delightful addition to my viewing schedule. The latest episode on October 10th was particularly poignant, shedding light on the complexities of James Herriot’s life.

Tonight, as I settled down for an episode of All Creatures Great and Small on the 10th of October, I couldn’t help but notice that our dear character, James, seemed a bit off his game.

During the interaction with Mr. Crabtree’s recalcitrant cow, Rose, who had stopped eating, his disposition changed subtly upon meeting the postman. The postman, in the course of his regular route, took a moment to share his own suggestions on addressing this specific cattle issue.

Additionally, he seized the moment to inquire about James’ health, as James had been declared unfit for military service following his diagnosis with brucellosis – a bacterial illness potentially acquired during his treatment of Crabtree’s diseased livestock the previous year.

The postman, obviously relieved, commented, ‘I’d say you’re still counting your blessings,'” said James, to which the postman responded, “I’m doing well, thanks,” quickly steering the conversation forward.

But Crabtree also shared the same sentiment.

He expressed his opinion that it was all for the better, didn’t he? This is in light of James being safely back home and able to use his veterinary skills on animals such as Rose again.

“We’re both lucky, in a way. I’m glad some good came of it.”

But those comments didn’t sit well with the vet, which Helen immediately picked up on.

At The Drovers’ pub, she prompted him to open up, and following a brief moment of silence, he shared his thoughts honestly.

“They both said I was lucky to have got brucellosis,” he said.

Indeed, I was. Indeed! That single encounter [during which I treated the infected herd] might’ve altered the course of everything.” (This response is from a hypothetical fan who has just encountered or interacted with someone in a way that could’ve had significant impact.)

But he still wasn’t convinced.

Helen went on to say, “Indeed, you had to leave the training uncompleted.” She found it favorable in any case.

But as James knows all too well, the training can be “as dangerous as the real thing”.

He said gravely, “It seemed as though they had been attacked when my team was struck down,” a fact she hadn’t known before.

“You never said,” responded Helen, who was taken aback by the tragic reveal.

“I didn’t want to frighten you in case I flew again,” he explained.

Helen gently interlaced their fingers, urging him for more revelations, yet he asserted that he had “come to terms with the matter,” though his actions suggested otherwise and left doubt in her mind.

“I’m so sorry, James,” she added.

And it’s not just James who has been profoundly impacted by what he experienced during his service.

Previously, Samuel West, the actor portraying Siegfried, remarked that after his return from Cairo, it’s clear that Tristan has undergone some transformation.

He went on to say, “His transformation is a mystery to me in many aspects.” It’s clear that he’s encountered unimaginable hardships, but he’s keeping those experiences hidden. His use of alcohol and jovial nature seem like a disguise.

“He can’t have had as happy and as boozy and as joyful a time as he says he has.”
