Doctor Who’s Paul McGann blames David Tennant for ‘all the snogging’ – says Doctor can’t be a “love interest”

As a seasoned movie critic with over three decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the recent interview with Paul McGann and India Fisher has shed some fascinating insights into the complex dynamics of romance within the Doctor Who universe.

Previously practicing physician Paul McGann has shared his thoughts on the occasional romantic undertones found within Doctor Who, attributing David Tennant as a significant factor in this regard.

Speaking in an interview in the most recent issue of Doctor Who Magazine, McGann was promoting the live audio event of The Stuff of Legend at Cadogan Hall with co-star India Fisher, who voices Charley Pollard.

Fisher stated, “Indeed, many have brought up this point, but I’ve always interpreted it differently. There was a lot of tension during Scherzo [2003]. Originally, we were supposed to kiss in that scene, but instead, we merged into one entity, and this caused quite a stir.

“But now, of course, the Doctor is snogging all over the shop.”

McGann added: “That’s because of David Tennant! The David Cassidy of Doctors!”

Fisher added: “However, for me… Charley’s affection for the Doctor is intricate. He is her all-in-one. She ran away at 18, so the Doctor serves as both her family and her romantic interest.

“Yeah, it’s a complicated feeling that she has for the Doctor.”

According to McGann, any relationship with Charley must remain strictly platonic. He firmly emphasized that The Doctor should never be a romantic interest; it’s simply not feasible.

Fisher then added: “Yeah, the Doctor needs to be asexual. There’s no sex in the TARDIS!”

Despite being the one who shared a first on-screen kiss as the eighth version of The Doctor, McGann later expressed: “I believe that’s a rule not to be broken. I think if such an event occurred, Doctor Who would lose one of its most significant advantages. Once broken, it can’t be undone.

At the lineup for the live recording event, you’ll find Alex Macqueen playing the role of The Master, and Nicholas Briggs lending his voice to the Daleks. An intriguing hint from the official summary suggests that “something is stirring in the secluded Cornish village of Merrymaid Bay.

Whispers about deceased individuals being employed in the tin mines are causing unease among the townsfolk. It’s now the task of the Doctor and Charley to uncover the truth behind this enigma.

Could it be possible that the tales about the ghostly figure known as the Bucca who lurks in the mines are real? Also, what terrible power does the Doctor’s most formidable adversaries, the Daleks, intend to release onto the cosmos?
