What you need to know
- Google has rolled out its Imagen 3 image generation tool to Gemini users across mobile and desktop.
- The tool spots sophisticated image generation capabilities, but free users can’t create images of people without a Gemini Advanced subscription.
- Imagen 3 leverages Google’s SynthID to watermark images generated using the tool to curb the spread of misinformation.
As a seasoned researcher with a keen interest in AI technology, I find Google’s rollout of Imagen 3 to be both intriguing and slightly frustrating. The intrigue comes from the promise of high-quality image generation capabilities, even in various styles like photorealistic landscapes or whimsical claymation scenes. However, the frustration lies in the fact that free users can’t generate images of people without a Gemini Advanced subscription.
Following a prolonged wait, Google’s highly anticipated Image Generation Tool powered by AI, known as Imagen 3, is now being deployed to Gemini users on both mobile and desktop devices. As a result, Gemini AI will automatically utilize this new image generation tool for creating images going forward.
It’s worth noting that the tool is broadly available for all Gemini users, even those using the free tier. However, the new tool’s capabilities are fairly limited for free users. As highlighted by TechRadar, free users can’t leverage the tool’s capabilities to generate images of people. They’ll need an active $20 subscription for Google’s Gemini Advanced service.
With a $20 subscription, you’ll not only enjoy unrestricted usage of Gemini Advanced, but it will also provide you with early access to cutting-edge tools such as Imagen 3. Additionally, this plan includes 2TB of storage within the Google One AI Premium Package and seamless integration of Gemini in Google Docs, Gmail, and various other platforms.
As highlighted by Google:
Picture 3 sets an unprecedented benchmark for image clarity, producing pictures using only a few keywords. Notably, you can instruct Gemini to fabricate images in diverse styles, such as photorealistic landscapes, detailed oil paintings, or charming claymation tableaus.
It checks out on print, but you need paper to confirm
It’s worth noting that advanced AI image creation tools such as Microsoft Copilot, DALL-E 3, Midjourney, among others, are frequently criticized for producing deepfakes and disseminating misinformation. This criticism has led to significant restrictions being imposed on their capabilities, which may give the impression of limiting their creative potential in generating images.
Despite some people viewing it as a potential decrease in image quality due to its advanced capabilities and built-in safeguards, Google has demonstrated that Imagen 3 outperforms other image generation models based on a variety of benchmarks they have presented.
To combat the issue of misinformation and deepfakes, Imagen 3 employs Google’s SynthID technology to embed watermarks on images produced using their tool. Google further assures users that they will have full control over the image generation process, allowing them to request Gemini to adjust the creation for a specific result.
