Freakier Friday Finally Has The Ultimate Premiere Date

As a seasoned actress with a career spanning over four decades, Jamie Lee Curtis has proven her versatility time and again. From her iconic role as Laurie Strode in the Halloween franchise to her memorable performance as Tess Coleman in Freaky Friday, she’s mastered the art of comedy and drama with aplomb.

We’ve been waiting all our lives for Disney to share this news.

On October 11th (next Friday), the company announced the release date for the sequel of ‘Freaky Friday’, titled ‘Even Freakier Friday‘. This upcoming movie stars Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis, as stated on their social media posts. They wrote, “Thank Goodness It’s Fun-day (TGIF). #EvenFreakierFriday will be in theaters on August 8th, 2025.

The earthquaking, body-shifting announcement was made with a picture of Linsday and Jamie Lee, tapped into their characters Anna and Tess, recreating the moment they realized “we seemed to have switched bodies.”

Disney’s newest announcement arrives three months subsequent to the news that Chad Michael Murray will once more embody Anna’s love interest, Jake – a character who rides motorcycles and shares a musical connection with Britney Spears. (In case you were wondering, ‘who is Jake’?)

Disney announced on Instagram that Jake is returning! The new Freaky Friday movie will be in theaters in 2025.

Joining Jamie Lee, Lindsay, and Chad will be original stars Christina Vidal Mitchell and Haley Hudson – reprising their roles as Anna’s closest friends and bandmates in Pink Slip, Maddie and Peg.

Tess’ spouse, Ryan (known as Mark Harmon), Anna’s educator, Mr. Bates (portrayed by Stephen Tobolowsky), and the Chinese restaurant owners, Pei-Pei and her mother (acted by Rosalind Chao and Lucille Soong)

Disney offered a sneak peek at a scene from the movie featuring Tess and Anna, with Tess in the driver’s seat of a convertible, giving the peace sign, and Anna seated beside her. Notably, both characters were dressed quite unusually.

The upcoming movie titled “Freaky Friday,” set to release twenty years after its initial version, offers a unique “multi-generational spin.” Though specifics about the plot are scarce, it seems that a similar event—either lightning or an earthquake—will occur again.

The film continues several years following Tess (Curtis) and Anna (Lohan) experiencing an identity dilemma, as stated in a June press release from Disney. Now, Anna is a mother and about to become a stepmother. As they face the numerous complications that arise when blending families, Tess and Anna uncover that perhaps love can strike twice.

The 2003 version of “Freaky Friday,” which is a retelling of Mary Rodgers’ 1972 novel, represents the second adaptation of this story. Previously, the tale was adapted into a film in 1976, and a television adaptation appeared in 1995.

2. The movie’s producer, Andrew Gunn, contacted Jodie Foster, who portrayed Annabel in the 1976 film, to propose that she might consider playing the mother’s role. However, Foster declined the offer as she felt her involvement could potentially divert attention from the project.

Initially, Annette Bening was chosen to portray the character Tess Coleman, however, she had to withdraw from the project just six days prior to when filming was scheduled to commence.

4. Following her rise to stardom as the first scream queen in “Halloween,” actress Jamie Lee Curtis believed her leading role days had ended. However, when director Mark Waters offered her a chance to step into Bening’s role instead, she found herself back in the limelight once more.

In a 2003 interview with The Telegraph, Curtis shared that he was 44 years old, slightly overweight, had grey hair and was choosing not to dye it. He also mentioned being satisfied with his life. In this line of work, he’s always understood that there comes a time when it’s appropriate to gracefully exit the stage.

5. After reading the script and speaking with Waters, Curtis decided to embrace the matriarch character by dying her hair and learning to play guitar for it, which ultimately boosted her career. “This illustrates the power of letting go and experiencing freedom,” Curtis shared.

6. Following her memorable performance in “The Parent Trap“, Lindsay Lohan momentarily stepped away from the film industry, expressing that she felt disoriented by the sudden surge of fame she experienced.

In her interview with IGN back in 2003, she expressed that the success of “The Parent Trap” happened suddenly, and it was an extraordinary movie. She confessed her struggle to surpass such greatness, stating her desire for a normal life, which led her to attend high school and participate in two projects on Disney Channel, simply to maintain her momentum.

But when she came across the script for Freaky Friday, Lohan knew it was “perfect” for her.

7. To secure the role of Anna, Lohan faced competition from four other actresses. At first, Waters wasn’t impressed by her audition, stating in a 2005 episode of TopMob’s True Hollywood Story that it was likely the worst out of the five. However, he also noted, “We also agreed she was a star. She possessed this captivating turmoil and vitality which we felt would be intriguing for the character.

8. Initially, Kelly Osbourne was chosen to portray Lohan’s friend in the film, but she declined after learning that her mother, Sharon Osbourne, had been diagnosed with colon cancer and decided not to participate in the movie instead.

2013 saw me at a crossroads, grappling with the decision between pursuing my career or spending precious moments with my mother, who was nearing the end of her life. The choice, it seemed, was glaringly obvious to me. I chose love over ambition, saying goodbye to my career and embracing the role as my mother’s constant caregiver. So, I became her round-the-clock nurse.

9. In the movie, Lohan shared her initial on-screen kiss with Chad Michael Murray, portraying the character Jake, who was Anna’s love interest. Lohan remarked in an interview, “By the 15th take, I wasn’t feeling too anxious anymore!

10. During a 2019 interview on Busy Tonight, Murray disclosed that he also shared a kiss with Curtis off-camera to calm Lohan’s nerves before their on-screen kiss. As Curtis tried to break the ice before filming, she reportedly pulled Lohan and Murray into her trailer. Murray then said that Curtis “suddenly grabbed me by the back of the head and kissed me.” His response? “Wow, I just kissed Jamie Lee Curtis! This is fantastic!

11. Initially, Tom Selleck was chosen to portray Tess’ boyfriend Ryan, but he left the production following Bening’s departure. Later, Mark Harmon stepped into the role and developed a strong bond with Curtis. In fact, the actress made several guest appearances on Harmon’s successful CBS series, NCIS.

12. Band member Amir Derakh from Orgy instructed Curtis and Lohan on playing the guitar. Later, Lohan recorded her debut single, “Ultimate,” for the soundtrack.

13. In the last scene, Liahn’s mother and former manager, Dina Liahn, makes a brief appearance as one of the attendees at the wedding.

14. In the 1976 film, Marc McClure, known for his role as Annabel’s romantic interest, has a short part where he appears as Boris, the delivery guy.

15. In an imaginative twist, Harry (Ryan Malgarini) and his grandfather (Harold Gould) discovered the fortune cookies that would swap their bodies, coinciding with an earthquake, leaving open the possibility for a follow-up storyline.

16. There was much talk about a sequel when Curtis mentioned at a 2022 Halloween Ends press event in Mexico City that she would indeed return as Tess. Additionally, she shared some news about her relationship with Lohan, joking that she always double-checks Lohan’s texts to ensure they aren’t scams.

Reflecting on one of our memorable moments together, I can’t help but reminisce about the time when we were trying to master a particular rap from a song while sitting in the car, munching on French fries. That tune was none other than “Like I Love You” by Justin Timberlake. We’d keep rewinding and replaying the tape, diligently jotting down the lyrics for that entire rap sequence.

17. I can hardly contain my excitement! Just three months before the beloved original film celebrates its 20th anniversary, it’s been confirmed that Curtis and Lohan are set to swap bodies once more! TopMob News has announced that a sequel is in the making, and I simply can’t wait to see what happens next.
